Musculatures saillantes, thématique de l’eau profondément hypnotique, et toute la beauté de la danse, ce sont là les éléments qui caractérisent le travail du talentueux photographe français, Julien Benhamou. Séduit par l’œuvre de Benhamou, le groupe Sunlife lui a ouvert les jardins du Sugar Beach resort pour une exposition-vente qui se prolongera jusqu’au 20 août 2024.
Julien Benhamou est un photographe de danse, de musculature et de mouvement. Il capture avec une fluidité et une dextérité remarquable toute la magie qui émane des danseurs étoiles et d’opéra. Cela explique sans doute la fascination du groupe pour son travail et l’élan qui a permis de faire découvrir l’artiste aux Mauriciens ainsi qu’aux résidents de l’hôtel Sugar Beach. Dans la sélection de photos, nous discernons des corps qui s’enlacent, s’harmonisent et se soutiennent, mais aussi qui se font face en solitaire, s’étendant et s’envolant presque. Ensemble et en soi, ces œuvres forment une exposition qui célèbre la danse et met en lumière un style de photographie capturant ce que nous apercevons rarement sur l’île.
Bien que le photographe affirme que son travail, amputé de tout désir de narration, se sculpte purement par un besoin d’esthétisme, il est difficile de ne pas être absorbé par ce qui est proposé et d’en faire sa propre interprétation. En effet, La Poésie du Mouvement invite à la rêverie, à un égarement plaisant qui peut ou non raconter une histoire, transmettre une émotion ou encore une idée. « J’amène la photo de danse dans une autre direction. Je pense que cela donne envie aux gens d’aller voir la danse, d’admirer les danseurs. Moi, j’aime les mettre en lumière. Et je trouve que c’est un art magnifique que chacun peut apprécier et s’en inspirer. L’idée c’est de créer des images fortes, et finalement, j’ai l’impression qu’au départ, il y a ce désir d’être en contact avec ces artistes, donc les photos deviennent en quelque sorte aussi des portraits d’eux », révèle Julien.
En ce qui concerne sa collaboration avec Sunlife, le photographe explique que le groupe a initialement beaucoup apprécié ses compositions avec de l’eau. « Quand on est photographe, on aime que notre travail soit vu. Un hôtel brasse pas mal de monde, et puis c’est un cadre agréable. J’aime bien investir les hôtels parce que ce sont des lieux photogéniques. Là, je viens cinq jours et j’ai quatre shootings avec des danseurs locaux. Pour l’instant, on a été sur la plage, dans les coins de l’hôtel, et on s’est beaucoup amusé tout en produisant des images propres aux magnifiques paysages de l’île Maurice ».
Pour Jean-Marc Ma-Poon, General Manager de Sugar Beach, cette collaboration avec le photographe s’impose comme une véritable révélation qui permet à l’hôtel de célébrer avec ses clients tout l’art de la danse. Ce dernier a également rappelé la position d’honneur que prend cette forme d’expression dans la culture de l’hôtel, qui propose deux fois par semaine des cours de danse à ses invités et qui leur offre ensuite la possibilité de se produire devant toute la clientèle.

Seduced by Benhamou’s work, the Sunlife group has opened the gardens of the Sugar Beach resort to him for an exhibition and sale that will run until 20 August 2024.
Julien Benhamou is a photographer of dance, musculature and movement. With remarkable fluidity and dexterity, he captures all the magic that emanates from star and opera dancers. This no doubt explains the group’s fascination with his work and the impetus behind introducing the artist to Mauritians and residents of the Sugar Beach Resort alike. In the selection of photos, we discern bodies embracing, harmonising and supporting each other, but also facing each other alone, stretching out and almost flying away. Together and on their own, these works form an exhibition that celebrates dance and highlights a style of photography that captures what we rarely see on the island.e
Although the photographer claims that his work, stripped of any desire for narrative, is sculpted purely by a need for aestheticism, it is difficult not to be absorbed by what is on offer and to make your interpretation. La Poésie du Mouvement invites you to daydream, to wander off in a pleasant way that may or may not tell a story, convey an emotion or even an idea. « I take dance photography in a different direction. I think it makes people want to go and see the dance, to admire the dancers. I like to put them in the spotlight. And I think it’s a magnificent art that everyone can appreciate and be inspired by. The idea is to create powerful images, and in the end, I have the impression that at the outset, there is this desire to be in contact with these artists, so the photos also become portraits of them in a way », reveals Julien.
As for his collaboration with Sunlife, the photographer explains that the group initially really appreciated his compositions using water. « When you’re a photographer, you like your work to be seen. A hotel attracts a lot of people, and it’s a pleasant setting. I like to invest in hotels because they’re photogenic places. I’m here for five days and I’ve got four shoots with local dancers. So far, we’ve been on the beach, in the corners of the hotel, and we’ve had a lot of fun while producing images that reflect the magnificent landscapes of Mauritius ».
For Jean-Marc Ma-Poon, General Manager of Sugar Beach, this collaboration with the photographer was a real revelation, enabling the hotel to celebrate the art of dance with its guests. He also pointed out the pride of place that this form of expression occupies in the culture of the hotel, which offers dance classes twice a week to its guests and then allows them to perform in front of the entire clientele.
