L’astre lunaire est depuis des millénaires associé au mystère, à la poésie, à l’astrologie. Et même si l’homme l’a désacralisé en y posant le pied pour la première fois en 1969, notre satellite inspire encore les artistes, à l’instar de Rebecca d’Souza, une jeune écrivaine mauricienne qui, à travers le personnage de Young Human, établit une connexion intime et une complicité singulière avec la lune.
Publié sous le titre « 89 Questions to the Moon » et présenté au public le 6 décembre dernier à la municipalité de Beau Bassin-Rose-Hill, le livre a été lancé par la mairesse, Rajeneedavee Mootoo Caroopen.
Rebecca d’Souza explique que l’inspiration pour créer cet univers unique est née pendant sa troisième année d’études en beaux-arts à l’université de Baroda en Inde, en 2019. La lune, en tant que symbole universel, a été choisie en raison de sa complexité et de son pouvoir d’unification pendant les heures nocturnes. La jeune artiste révèle d’ailleurs qu’elle-même a trouvé du réconfort dans cette entité céleste pendant ses années d’études à l’étranger, loin de sa famille. L’origine du titre, « 89 Questions » trouve quant à lui sa justification dans l’impulsion créatrice de l’artiste qui déclare avoir été animé par un élan d’écriture qui s’est arrêté précisément après la 89e question.
L’œuvre, initialement publiée en ligne, a gagné en matérialité grâce au soutien de la mairie de Rose-Hill et de CODEPArta Indianoceanika. Disponible dans les bibliothèques locales telles que Le Printemps, Le Cygne, et Bookcourts, le livre se dévoile à travers des vers rêveurs et une prose évocatrice. Rebecca espère que les lecteurs, moins jeunes, trouveront une connexion avec leur âme d’enfance, une légèreté souvent éclipsée par les routines et les responsabilités de la vie adulte.
La mairesse, Madame Rajeneedavee Mootoo Caroopen, a quant à elle salué l’effort de Rebecca, âgée seulement de 26 ans, et a souligné l’engagement continu de la municipalité dans le soutien des jeunes talents mauriciens. Elle a ajouté que « 89 Questions to the Moon » sera disponible à la librairie située dans l’enceinte de la municipalité de Rose-Hill pour le plus grand plaisir des lecteurs et pour l’enrichissement du patrimoine culturel local.
Ce nouveau joyau de la littérature mauricienne offre ainsi une invitation à plonger dans un univers candide, doux et poétique, portant la promesse d’une évasion enchantée pour tous ceux qui se laisseront emporter par ses pages. For thousands of years, the moon has been associated with mystery, poetry and astrology. And even if mankind desacralised it by setting foot on it for the first time in 1969, our satellite still inspires artists, like Rebecca d’Souza, a young Mauritian writer who, through the character of Young Human, establishes an intimate connection and singular complicity with the moon.
Published under the title "89 Questions to the Moon" and presented to the public on 6 December at the municipality of Beau Bassin-Rose-Hill, the book was launched by the mayor, Rajeneedavee Mootoo Caroopen.
Rebecca d’Souza explains that the inspiration for creating this unique universe came during her third year studying fine arts at the University of Baroda in India in 2019. The moon, as a universal symbol, was chosen because of its complexity and unifying power during the hours of darkness. The young artist reveals that she found comfort in this celestial entity during her years of study abroad, far from her family. The origin of the title, « 89 Questions », can be traced back to the artist’s creative impulse, who claims to have been driven by a writing impulse that stopped precisely after the 89th question.
Initially published online, the work has been made more tangible thanks to the support of the Rose-Hill town council and CODEPArta Indianoceanika. Available in local libraries such as Le Printemps, Le Cygne, and Bookcourts, the book reveals itself through dreamy verses and evocative prose. Rebecca hopes that older readers will find a connection with their childhood soul, a lightness often overshadowed by the routines and responsibilities of adult life.
Mayor Rajeneedavee Mootoo Caroopen praised the efforts of Rebecca, who is only 26 years old, and underlined the municipality’s ongoing commitment to supporting young Mauritian talent. She added that « 89 Questions to the Moon » will be available at the bookshop located within the municipality of Rose-Hill to the delight of readers and to enrich the local cultural heritage.
