Jossy Chavagnan : première femme Concierge Clés d’Or à Heritage le Telfair

Jossy Chavagnan : First woman to obtain the Clés d’Or Concierge at Heritage le Telfair

The Clés d’Or embodies the excellence of concierge service in the hotel industry. There are only 4,000 of them in the world and around twenty in Mauritius. Jossy Chavagnan is among those who received this Grail for the profession, becoming the first woman to be awarded at Heritage Le Telfair last year. A badge that she now proudly hangs on the lapel of her jacket and which expresses her determination to offer the best possible service.

Nothing predestined this Bay du Cap resident for a career in the hotel industry. After attending secondary school at Collège de Notre Dame in Curepipe and a stint in a call centre, Jossy followed her father’s advice and enrolled at Sir Gaëtan Duval Hotel School for a diploma in Tourism Management. It was during her work placements that she developed a passion for the hotel business. « During my studies, I had the opportunity to do several internships. The first was at Harel Mallac, then at Heritage Awali, in the housekeeping department. For my last placement, I was lucky enough to go to Evian in France for three months. This training in Evian was a wonderful, life-changing experience. I met some fantastic people there and learned a lot, » she says.

On her return, she obtained her diploma and started in customer relations at Movenpick (now Outrigger), where she stayed for two years before embarking on further studies. With a degree in tourism, hotel and leisure management in hand, she joined Lux Resorts as a reservation agent. Then, after another two years, she embarked on a cruise ship as a Deck Supervisor for seven months. It was a short but very rewarding and enriching experience that she was unable to extend because, in the meantime, she was about to get married. So she finally settled down at Heritage Le Telfair in 2016. Not in housekeeping, where she had worked until then, but in concierge services, which she discovered thanks to Jay Manav Chutooree, who was to become her mentor.

« Concierge services encompass everything to do with personalising customer service, from start to finish, whether regarding transfers, bookings, activities or the pursuit of excellence, » explains Jossy. With such a deep understanding of the business and multiple adventures in the world of hospitality, Jossy’s ascent was somewhat inevitable. The expert explains, however, that the race for obtaining the Clés d’Or was not an easy task, but the result is undoubtedly gratifying.

« To achieve the Clés d’Or, it’s essential to be passionate and to accumulate as much experience as possible, with a minimum of five years in the hotel concierge department. It’s also important to have mentors who support you, as well as the encouragement of the hotel management for your project and your application as a Clés d’Or concierge. I was lucky enough to benefit from both. Reaching this goal required both experience and a strong personality, » she explains.

« As a concierge, our mission is to create memorable experiences for our guests, personalising every single detail of their stay. I’m proud to have taken this step and to be the first woman to obtain this distinction.  It’s the result of my passion, my dedication and the invaluable support of my parents and colleagues. I hope it will inspire other women to follow their dreams in the hospitality industry and seize every opportunity that comes their way, » she adds.

Curious by nature and driven by a constant desire to excel, Jossy did make the most of each and every opportunity presented to her. The unconditional support of her parents and their insistence on the importance of education have been decisive factors in the young woman’s career. Positioning herself today as a source of inspiration for anyone aspiring to excel in the tourism industry in Mauritius and beyond, Jossy does not slowdown in her path and intends to continue going up the ladder.
