Mautourco: 70 Years of Human Excellence and Innovation
Richard Robert: “At Mautourco, people are at the heart of our success”
Since its creation in 1955, Mautourco has accompanied the spectacular transformation of tourism in Mauritius. From a handful of vehicles handling the island’s first airport transfers to managing hundreds of thousands of travellers each year, the company has grown into one of the country’s most trusted and dynamic tourism operators.
As Mautourco celebrates its 70th anniversary, Richard Robert, its Managing Director, reflects on the company’s journey, the milestones that have shaped it, and the human values that continue to define its success.
Transformation through agility and vision
When Richard Robert took the helm, Mauritius was opening up to major international hotel brands. Rather than seeing this as a threat, he viewed it as a catalyst for transformation.
“The arrival of global hotel chains didn’t disrupt our business model, but it certainly accelerated our evolution,” he explains.
Mautourco responded by strengthening its local expertise, operational agility, and technological innovation, while maintaining its commitment to personalised service. Strategic collaborations with international hospitality groups have since blended Mauritian warmth with world-class standards.
Growth and resilience
As Mauritius’ visitor numbers grew from around 650,000 to well over a million per year, Mautourco experienced a threefold increase in travellers handled.
“We restructured our teams into specialised departments to ensure a truly personalised experience. Technology played a key role, but our greatest strength lies in the dedication and passion of our 300 team members,” says Richard Robert.
Two pivotal moments have marked his leadership: the merger with White Sand Tours in 2015, which required integrating two distinct corporate cultures, and the COVID-19 crisis, which tested the company’s resilience.
“Eighteen months without clients or revenue… We made it through thanks to extraordinary solidarity. Our guides, drivers, and staff took on new roles with incredible creativity and commitment.”
A strong company culture
Recognised several times – Best Place to Work, Sustainability Awards – Mautourco stands out for its vibrant corporate culture. “A happy employee makes a happy client. When people love what they do, results follow naturally. Our role as leaders is to nurture that passion and make it thrive,” Richard Robert affirms.
A future shaped by people
Despite the industry’s challenges, he remains optimistic.
“The world is changing, and so are expectations. Jobs will evolve with digitalisation, but the heart of tourism will always be the human experience — that authentic connection between the visitor and the island. Mautourco has already planted the seeds of this transition. The future is in good hands.”
