À Maurice pour un partenariat avec le One&Only Le Saint Géran à travers Lux Tennis, Martina Hingis, ancien numéro 1 du tennis partage son immense bonheur de retrouver notre île. Aujourd’hui maman d’une petite fille de deux ans, elle se dit heureuse de sa vie actuelle, loin de la pression des compétitions où elle brillait naguère. Au cours d’un entretien exclusif à Voya-g.com, elle revient sur les grands moments de sa carrière et donne son opinion sur le tennis contemporain.
Au Café l’Artisan du One&Only Le Saint Géran où elle nous attend en compagnie d’Alex Duxbury, la responsable de communication du resort, Martina Hingis arbore ce sourire franc qui l’a toujours caractérisé sur les courts. Elle a toujours, par ailleurs, ce même charme et cette même élégance qui la démarquait de ses adversaires beaucoup plus « athlétiques » comme les sœurs Williams et même Mary Pierce. D’emblée, elle nous partage sa joie de retrouver Maurice où elle revient pour la troisième fois.
« Grâce à Mary Pierce, qui est aujourd’hui devenue une amie proche, j’étais déjà venue pour deux camps d’entraînement. Mais c’est ma toute première fois au OOLSG. Je suis absolument ravie de l’accueil que j’ai reçu. J’ai été très entourée et reçue une attention particulière avec pratiquement tout le monde qui me reconnaissait ». Elle ajoute qu’elle a déjà découvert l’île avec des rencontres avec la population et était toujours fascinée par les couleurs, les saveurs et les odeurs locales. Elle s’apprêtait d’ailleurs à aller au contact des Mauriciens au marché coloré de Flacq.
Revenant à sa présence au OOLSG, elle explique que cela se fait dans le cadre d’un partenariat avec Lux Tennis qui « on l’espère va grandir dans les années à venir ». « J’ai déjà joué dans plusieurs hôtels à travers le monde à travers ce partenariat. Je joue avec les clients, je donne des leçons. Évidemment, je passe des vacances formidables en compagnie de gens extraordinaires. Nous espérons revenir au OOLSG deux ou trois fois par an lors de la haute saison mais cela reste à être finalisé. Mais il y a aussi d’autres joueurs légendes du tennis comme David Ferrer, Nicolas Mahut ou Ana Ivanovic qui travaillent avec Lux Tennis ».
Après une carrière de plus 23 ans comme joueuse professionnelle, l’ancien numéro a toujours le tennis chevillé au corps et ne compte pas raccrocher de sitôt. « Le tennis me donne de nouvelles opportunités. C’est grâce au tennis que je peux avoir la vie le que j’ai aujourd’hui. Tant que je pourrai jouer, rendre les gens heureux et gagner ma vie, je continuerai à le faire. Ma mère a aussi une école de tennis et je l’aide autant que je peux. Il y a des talents prometteurs que je suis. Je suis reconnaissante en cela ma maman qui a été ma première coach et qui m’a guidé dans ma carrière ».
Son histoire avec la petite balle jaune commence d’ailleurs très tôt au berceau quand sa mère la prénomme Martina en hommage à la fameuse championne Martina Navratilova et lui donne sa première raquette à l’âge de 2 ans. Si elle ne ressent pas la pression du nom, c’est parce que sa carrière de joueuse professionnelle était très intense. « On passait notre vie à voyager, puis à s’entraîner et jouer en compétition. On avait peu de temps de faire du tourisme. Maintenant, je pense que cela est en train de changer et les jeunes prennent le temps de faire autre chose. Mais je n’ai pas de regret et je ne voudrais pas changer ».
Effectivement de regret, elle n’en a point même pas un petit pincement pour Roland Garros, le seul tournoi du Grand Chelem qu’elle n’a pas pu accrocher à votre palmarès. « Pourquoi devrais-je en avoir ? J’ai gagné tellement de tournois dans ma carrière que je ne vais pas laisser deux défaites gâcher tout cela. J’ai gagné des matches extraordinaires où l’on ne me donnait pas grande chance. J’ai plutôt envie de me rappeler les grands moments. Je pense qu’avec ma taille et tout le contexte de l’époque, je devrais plutôt être fière de ce que j’ai accompli ».
Quant au tennis contemporain, elle est d’avis que les jeunes, en particulier les filles, ressentent plus le besoin d’avoir une vie plus équilibrée, loin de la pression des tournois et des médias à de l’ancienne numéro 1, Ashleigh Marty qui a pris sa retraite à l’âge de 25 ans et de Naomi Osaka.
« Ashleigh a gagné trois tournois du Grand Chelem en simples, et aussi l’US Open en double ; elle a été numéro mondial pendant trois ans. Je peux comprendre qu’elle arrête sa carrière professionnelle pour passer à autre chose. Le rythme de vie d’une joueuse professionnelle est très dur quand on s’assoit seule dans sa chambre d’hôtel et qu’on passe sa vie dans l’avion. On a envie de vivre une vie plus convenue. Quant à Naomi, elle est très introvertie et la pression médiatique avec les interviews, les talk-shows peuvent devenir difficiles à supporter. Il n’est pas toujours évident à trouver le bon équilibre. Je pense qu’elle n’a pas été bien protégée par son entourage ».
Une protection que Martina a toujours pu avoir de sa mère et qu’elle donne aujourd’hui à sa fille. Bonne continuation et à très bientôt sous le soleil mauricien.

In Mauritius for a partnership with the One&Only Le Saint Géran through Lux Tennis, Martina Hingis, former number 1 in tennis, shares her immense happiness to be back on our island. Now the mother of a two-year-old daughter, she says she is happy with her current life, far from the pressure of the competitions where she used to shine. In an exclusive interview with Voya-g.com, she looks back on the highlights of her career and gives her opinion on contemporary tennis.
At the Café l’Artisan at the One&Only Le Saint Géran, where she is waiting for us with Alex Duxbury, the resort’s communications manager, Martina Hingis wears the frank smile that has always characterised her on the courts. She still has the same charm and elegance that set her apart from her much more athletic opponents, such as the Williams sisters and even Mary Pierce. From the outset, OOLSG shared her joy at returning to Mauritius for the third time.
« Thanks to Mary Pierce, who has now become a close friend, I had already come for two training camps. But this is my very first time at the OOLSG. I am delighted with the welcome I received. I was very well looked after and received special attention with almost everyone recognising me. She added that she had already discovered the island through meetings with the population and was always fascinated by the local colours, flavours and smells. She was about to meet Mauritians at the colourful market in Flacq.
Talking about her presence at the OOLSG, she explained that it was part of a partnership with Lux Tennis which « we hope will grow in the coming years ». « I have already played in several hotels around the world through this partnership. I play with the guests, I give lessons. I’m having a great holiday with great people. We hope to come back to the OOLSG two or three times a year in the high season, but that has yet to be finalised. But there are also other tennis legends like David Ferrer, Nicolas Mahut and Ana Ivanovic who work with Lux Tennis.
After a career spanning over 23 years as a professional player, the former number one still has her heart set on tennis and doesn’t intend to hang up any time soon. « Tennis gives me new opportunities. It is thanks to tennis that I can have the life I have today. As long as I can play, make people happy and earn a living, I will continue to do so. My mother also has a tennis school and I help her as much as possible. There are promising talents that I follow. I am grateful to my mother who was my first coach and who guided me in my career.
Her story with the little yellow ball began very early in the cradle when her mother named her Martina after the famous champion Martina Navratilova and gave her, her first racket at the age of two. If she didn’t feel the pressure of the name, it was because her career as a professional player was so intense. « We spent our lives travelling, then training and playing competitively. There was little time for sightseeing. Now I think that is changing and young people are taking the time to do other things. But I have no regrets and I wouldn’t want to change.
Indeed, she has no regrets, not even a small twinge of regret for Roland Garros, the only Grand Slam tournament she has not been able to add to your list of achievements. « Why should I have any? I’ve won so many tournaments in my career that I’m not going to let two losses spoil it. I’ve won some great matches where I wasn’t given much of a chance. I’m more interested in remembering the great moments. I think that with my size and the whole context of the time, I should be proud of what I have achieved.
As for contemporary tennis, she believes that young people, especially girls, feel more of a need to have a more balanced life, away from the pressure of tournaments and the media like former number one Ashleigh Marty who retired at the age of 25 and Naomi Osaka.
« Ashleigh won three Grand Slam singles tournaments, and also the US Open in doubles; she was world number one for three years. I can understand her stopping her professional career to move on. The rhythm of life as a professional player is very hard when you sit alone in your hotel room and spend your life on a plane. You want to live a more conventional life. As for Naomi, she is very introverted and the media pressure of interviews and talk shows can be hard to handle. It’s not always easy to find the right balance. I think she has not been well protected by her entourage”.
Protection that Martina has always been able to get from her mother and that she now gives to her daughter. Good luck and see you soon under the Mauritian sun.
