L’art se planifie rarement à l’avance, on ne se presse pas dans le processus, on se nourrit de nouveaux territoires, de nouvelles rencontres, et on laisse venir l’inspiration. C’est un peu dans cet esprit que le collectif international d’artistes, ESCALE, se prépare à se rendre à Rodrigues pour la 5e édition de leur résidence artistique. Baptisée cette fois-ci « The Transit of Venus across the Sun », l’aventure artistique a débuté le jeudi 7 mars 2024 avec une conférence de presse à la galerie Imaaya à Phoenix et le lancement d’une exposition énigmatique intitulée « Le Portrait ».
Dirigé par le Mauricien Amanullah ‘Manou’ Soobhany, ESCALE a mené ces dernières années des résidences artistiques fructueuses à Maurice. Cette fois-ci, c’est le territoire insulaire éblouissant de Rodrigues qui a été choisi pour libérer toute la fièvre créatrice des artistes venant d’ici et d’ailleurs, dont plus de 14 pays différents. Le projet semble déjà se présenter avec une fertilité des plus enrichissantes et la galerie Imaaya n’a pas manqué de capturer un peu de cette essence en accueillant l’exposition « Le Portrait », qui se déroulera jusqu’au 15 mars 2024. Celle-ci réunit quelques travaux d’artistes de médiums divers, dont Manou, Evan Sohun, Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir, Alix Lejuge, Cendrine Bolaram, Shinici Mizoguchi et Arvin Ombika. Nous retrouvons des créations étourdissantes faites avec des cheveux, des tableaux explorant l’identité et l’intériorité, des sculptures renvoyant à l’être et à l’entourage, et d’autres surprises subjuguantes à découvrir.
Pour l’artiste Manou, cette exposition ne reflète aucunement les créations qui vont sortir de la résidence artistique, mais elle donne un aperçu de l’esprit collaboratif et de la diversité artistique qui se présentent au sein du collectif d’artistes qui sera à Rodrigues tout au long du mois d’avril. « Le Portrait » propose, d’autre part, de nouvelles manières de se voir, de se comprendre, ou de se présenter au monde; l’exposition arrive à créer de l’engouement pour ce qui est à venir de la part du collectif et du paysage rodriguais.
Pour revenir à « The Transit of Venus across the Sun », il est bon de noter que ce nom, selon Manou, n’est pas le thème de la résidence; il n’impose rien aux artistes qui y participeront, et il ne veut aucunement influencer les œuvres qui en ressortiront. L’artiste explique que ce nom a été choisi en s’inspirant de l’expédition menée en 1761 par une communauté de scientifiques pour trouver le meilleur spot afin d’observer le mouvement de Vénus par rapport au soleil. Ces derniers ont terminé leur quête à Rodrigues où ils ont pu profiter d’un ciel propice pour cette observation. Alors, c’est au tour des artistes rassemblés par ESCALE de se poser à Rodrigues, dans le même esprit que ces scientifiques du passé, d’explorer l’île et de faire des découvertes artistiques en tous genres. L’idée est aussi de célébrer le territoire et de l’enrichir avec des œuvres diverses.
La résidence se tiendra à Port Mathurin, où les artistes pourront explorer une gamme variée de médiums artistiques, incluant le dessin, la peinture, la sculpture, la photographie, la vidéo, etc. Composé de 20 artistes qui apporteront leur vision unique à ce projet, le groupe d’artistes terminera cette aventure avec bien évidemment une exposition et peut-être aussi un concert. En attendant, l’artiste islandaise Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir se rejouit de cette expérience à venir : « Je suis excitée à l’idée de visiter Rodrigues et de découvrir son environnement inspirant pour nourrir mon art. Je suis convaincue que cette édition, comme les autres qui l’ont précédée, sera une belle célébration de la diversité artistique et culturelle, et nous sommes impatients de voir les merveilles qui en résulteront ».
ESCALE presents ' The Transit of Venus across the Sun ' and ' Le Portrait

It is in this spirit that the international artists’ collective ESCALE is preparing to travel to Rodrigues for the 5th edition of their artistic residency. Known this time as « The Transit of Venus across the Sun », the artistic adventure kicked off on Thursday 7 March 2024 with a press conference at the Imaaya Gallery in Phoenix and the launch of an enigmatic exhibition entitled « The Portrait ».
Directed by Mauritian Amanullah ‘Manou’ Soobhany, who lives in Germany,ESCALE has led several successful artistic residencies in Mauritius in recent years. This time, it’s the dazzling island territory of Rodrigues that has been chosen to unleash all the creative fever of artists from here and abroad, including over 14 different countries. The project already seems to be presenting itself with a most enriching fertility, and the Imaaya Gallery has not failed to capture a little of this essence by hosting the « Le Portrait » exhibition, which will run until 15 March 2024. The exhibition brings together works by artists in a variety of media, including Manou, Evan Sohun, Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir, Alix Lejuge, Cendrine Bolaram, Shinici Mizoguchi and Arvin Ombika. We find stunning creations made with hair, paintings exploring identity and interiority, sculptures referring to being and surroundings, and other subjugating surprises to discover.
For artist Manou, this exhibition in no way reflects the creations that will emerge from the artistic residency, but it does give a glimpse of the collaborative spirit and artistic diversity on show within the artists’ collective that will be in Rodrigues throughout April. « Le Portrait » also proposes new ways of seeing, understanding and presenting ourselves to the world, and the exhibition succeeds in creating excitement about what’s to come for the collective and the landscape of Rodrigues.
Coming back to ‘The Transit of Venus across the Sun’, it’s worth noting that this name, according to Manou, is not the theme of the residency; it imposes nothing on the artists taking part, and is in no way intended to influence the works that emerge. The artist explains that the name was chosen after the expedition led by a group of scientists in 1761 to find the best spot to observe the movement of Venus about the sun. They ended their quest in Rodrigues, where they were able to take advantage of the favourable skies for this observation. Now it’s the turn of the artists brought together by ESCALE to settle in Rodrigues, in the same spirit as these scientists of the past, to explore the island and make artistic discoveries of all kinds. The idea is also to celebrate the territory and enrich it with diverse works.
The residency will be held in Port Mathurin, where artists will be able to explore a wide range of artistic media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video and more. Comprising 20 artists who will bring their unique vision to the project, the group of artists will conclude their adventure with an exhibition and possibly a concert. In the meantime, Icelandic artist Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir is looking forward to the experience: « I’m excited at the prospect of visiting Rodrigues and discovering its inspiring environment to nurture my art. I’m convinced that this edition, like the others before it, will be a wonderful celebration of artistic and cultural diversity, and we can’t wait to see the wonders that will result ».
