The Mauritius Chef Association celebrates the new talents and recent successes of Mauritian chefs
Every year, the Mauritius Chef Association (MCA) once again held its induction ceremony, a key gathering to welcome new members, celebrate the achievements of the culinary industry, and take stock of the current situation of chefs in Mauritius. On September 19, 2024, the Ravenala Attitude Hotel was the setting for this flagship event of the local gastronomic scene, testifying to the growing enthusiasm of young people for this sector and the industry professionals.
This induction welcomed more than a hundred new members from about twenty hotel establishments, restaurants and cooking schools. Emerging talents, as well as others already well-established, were sworn in during the ceremony, promising to make Mauritian cuisine known, respected and valued wherever they are in the world. Among the establishments represented were the Escoffier school, the Labourdonnais hotel, Beachcomber Catering, as well as home chefs, bringing together various players in Mauritian cuisine under one roof.
While welcoming the new members, MCA President Chef Mooroogun Coopen highlighted the critical importance of their work within the industry: « The restaurant business plays a key role in the customer experience. A good meal and personalized service can turn an ordinary stay into a memorable experience. This represents not only a source of revenue that improves the profitability of the industry but also the brand image of our destination. It is therefore essential to invest in the training and quality of life of these young people so that they continue to evolve in Mauritius. » He also recalled the role of the MCA as a motivator and creator of opportunities, with its 26 years of existence in the sector and its commitment to promoting local cuisine.
The ceremony also celebrated the industry’s recent successes in international competitions, including two silver medals: one won at the African final of the World Pastry Cup in Marrakech, and the other at the African Culinary Cup by young chefs under the age of 25; not to mention the qualification of the Mauritian team, 2nd in Africa, for the final of the Bocuse d’Or. The MCA also announced its next national competition, which will be held on October 18 at Sir Gaëtan Duval School, providing a new opportunity to highlight Mauritian culinary excellence.
