J’oublie souvent qu’il n’est Zametrotar: A Musical Immersion into the Intimate

On March 27 and 28, the Caudan Arts Centre will host a singular performance at the crossroads of music, theatre, and visual art. With J’oublie souvent qu’il n’est Zametrotar, Carol Lamport presents an original musical one-woman show—intimate, deeply Mauritian, and driven by a voice, a story, and a necessity: to speak, to feel, to exist.

An Inner Journey Carried by the Voice

A singer and performer known for her background in musical theatre, Carol Lamport reaches a major milestone with this project. For the first time, she writes and composes an entire show, conceived as an inner journey. On stage, she embodies “She,” a Mauritian woman in her fifties who, in the midst of an existential crisis, begins therapy. A journey toward the woman she has become—and the one she still aspires to be.

Through sensitive texts and original songs, the performance revisits the impulses, silences, wounds, and rebirths that shape a lifetime. The voice becomes the guiding thread between past and present, illuminating a path of transformation. Relationships, separation, a woman’s perspective on society, depression, family, motherhood—the themes are universal, yet treated with a precision deeply rooted in the Mauritian lived experience.

A Dialogue Between Music and Image

The uniqueness of the project also lies in its artistic dialogue. For the first time, Carol Lamport shares the stage with the visual universe of her husband, painter and visual artist Pascal Lagesse. His images and animations, projected on a large screen in his distinctive “ZAFER” style, envelop the narrative in a poetic and immersive dimension. Together, they present a 100% Mauritian work in which music and image respond to one another with subtlety.

The musical arrangements are by Chris Arles, who has crafted a soundscape that is both original and familiar, enhancing emotion without ever overwhelming it. Direction by Sandrine Raghoonauth plays with rhythm, silence, and breathing space, allowing full expression of the body, the spoken word, and the stage. The Caudan Arts Centre supports the production with its technical expertise in sound and lighting, revealing the show in all its nuance.

A Bilingual, Embodied Work

Bilingual in nature, the performance flows naturally between Mauritian French and Creole, reflecting a living and fully embraced identity. Without attempting to smooth or overly universalise its message, J’oublie souvent qu’il n’est Zametrotar boldly claims its local roots, its own musicality, and its sensitive gaze on the here and now.

More than a performance, it is an immersion. An invitation into a character’s mind, to listen to her inner voice—and perhaps recognise our own. A courageous and sincere work that gently, yet lucidly, reminds us that movement is always possible, even when we believe the moment has passed.
