En ces temps où le manque de main-d’œuvre cause des soucis au secteur de l’hospitalité, se dessine sous des perspectives prometteuses, porté par la Fondation Espoir Développement, qui vient de célébrer la réussite de jeunes talents mauriciens. Le 6 novembre 2024, en collaboration avec la National Social Inclusion Foundation et l’Union européenne, le groupe a célébré la remise des certificats à de jeunes diplômés du Projet Employabilité Jeunes (PEJ) lors d’une cérémonie au Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium à Réduit. Après six mois d’apprentissage intensif, ces jeunes de 16 à 25 ans repartent avec de solides compétences et une motivation renouvelée pour bâtir leur avenir dans le secteur de l’hôtellerie.
Cette année, 247 jeunes ont intégré le programme ; parmi eux, 201 en ressortent diplômés et prêts à s’élancer dans le monde professionnel. Ces derniers ont pu compter sur l’accompagnement de 40 mentors, des professionnels aguerris du secteur qui les ont guidés dans leur apprentissage, leurs stages, et leurs aspirations. Initié en 2004, le PEJ propose aux jeunes une formation complète dans les différents métiers de l’hôtellerie, incluant la maintenance, la cuisine, le service en salle, et bien plus encore. Ce parcours de six mois associe des cours théoriques hebdomadaires et la possibilité de stages dans les hôtels Beachcomber. Depuis sa création, le programme a déjà formé près de 4 000 jeunes Mauriciens, ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives professionnelles et favorisant l’employabilité des participants.
Karine Curé, Chief Brand & Communication Officer de Beachcomber, a souligné l’impact transformateur du PEJ, qui offre aux jeunes une véritable ouverture vers des perspectives nouvelles, tant sur le plan professionnel que personnel. Elle a précisé qu’en octobre, 154 d’entre eux intégreront les hôtels du groupe pour des stages, leur permettant d’explorer la diversité des métiers de l’hôtellerie tout en développant leurs compétences. Ce diplôme, selon elle, représente bien plus qu’une validation officielle ; il incarne le fruit de leur travail et leur résilience. Elle a également réaffirmé l’engagement de Beachcomber à soutenir la jeunesse mauricienne avec une énergie constante et une passion renouvelée, dans une démarche de coconstruction d’un avenir prometteur.
En plus des compétences techniques, le PEJ a veillé à sensibiliser les élèves à des enjeux de société cruciaux avec la contribution précieuse de l’ONG PILS et de Développement, Rassemblement, Information et Prévention (DRIP). Ainsi les jeunes ont eu l’occasion d’approfondir leurs connaissances sur des sujets tels que la santé sexuelle et la prévention contre l’abus de substances.
Pour Kinsley Muhammad, 19 ans, l’obtention de son diplôme marque un tournant dans sa vie. « J’ai découvert le PEJ grâce aux réseaux sociaux. Au début, j’étais un peu timide, mais grâce au soutien des professeurs, j’ai pu surmonter cette peur. Je me suis épanoui dans la filière Food & Beverage, particulièrement dans le métier de barman, et je suis actuellement en stage à l’hôtel Canonnier Beachcomber. Recevoir mon diplôme aujourd’hui est un immense honneur, et j’espère être bientôt officiellement embauché », confie-t-il, le sourire aux lèvres.
À noter d’autre part que la fondation célèbre cette année son 25e anniversaire, tandis que le programme atteint le cap de ses 20 ans. Ces célébrations ont permis d’affirmer la pérennité du projet et de transmettre des messages inspirants aux participants, en soulignant que tout est possible avec le travail et la discipline, ainsi que l’importance de rester solidaires malgré les différences.
The Mauritian hotel industry is enriched by new talents trained by the Youth Employability Project
At a time when the lack of manpower is causing concern in the hospitality sector, promising prospects are emerging, supported by the Fondation Espoir Développement, which has just celebrated the success of young Mauritian talent. On 6 November 2024, in collaboration with the National Social Inclusion Foundation and the European Union, the group celebrated the presentation of certificates to young graduates of the Projet Employabilité Jeunes (PEJ) at a ceremony at the Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium in Réduit. After six months of intensive learning, these young people aged 16 to 25 leave with solid skills and renewed motivation to build their future in the hospitality sector.
This year, 247 young people took part in the programme, 201 of whom graduated and are now ready to enter the world of work. These young people could count on the support of 40 mentors, seasoned industry professionals who guided them through their apprenticeships, placements and aspirations. Launched in 2004, the EYP offers young people comprehensive training in the various hotel trades, including maintenance, cooking, room service and much more. The six-month programme combines weekly theory classes with work placements in Beachcomber hotels. Since its creation, the programme has already trained nearly 4,000 young Mauritians, opening up new career prospects and boosting participants’s employability.
Karine Curé, Beachcomber’s Chief Brand & Communication Officer, emphasised the transformative impact of EYP, which offers young people a real opening to new prospects, both professionally and personally. She said that in October, 154 of them will be joining the Group’s hotels for work placements, enabling them to explore the diversity of the hospitality industry while developing their skills. This diploma, she said, represents much more than official validation; it embodies the fruits of their labour and their resilience. She also reaffirmed Beachcomber’s commitment to support the youth of Mauritius with constant energy and renewed passion, in a process of co-construction of a promising future.
In addition to technical skills, the EYP focused on raising the students’ awareness of crucial social issues, with the invaluable contribution of the NGO PILS and Développement, Rassemblement, Information et Prévention (DRIP). The young people were given the opportunity to learn more about subjects such as sexual health and substance abuse prevention.
For 19-year-old Kinsley Muhammad, graduating marks a turning point in his life. ‘I discovered EYP through social networking. I was a bit shy at first, but thanks to the support of my teachers, I was able to overcome that fear. I’ve blossomed in the Food & Beverage stream, particularly in the bartending profession, and I’m currently doing a work placement at the Canonnier Beachcomber Hotel. Receiving my diploma today is a huge honour, and I hope to be officially employed soon’, he confides, with a smile on his face.
The foundation is also celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, while the programme is 20 years old. The celebrations were an opportunity to confirm the project’s durability and to pass on inspiring messages to the participants, emphasising that anything is possible with hard work and discipline, and the importance of standing together despite differences.
