Sustainability: Sunlife receives two prestigious awards at the 24th Hospitality Awards®.

2024 has been a rewarding year for the Sunlife Group.  After winning awards at the Sustainable Awards organised by the Tourism Authority and the Ministry of the Environment and the PWC Hospitality Awards, the hotel group received two prizes at the 24th Hospitality Awards®, held in Paris on 28 November under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron. Chaired by Puneet Chhatwal, CEO of IHCL (Indian Hotels Company Limited), in the presence of Marina Ferrari, France’s Minister Delegate for the Tourism Economy, the ceremony rewarded establishments and professionals from the hotel sector for their exemplary initiatives, selected from among 30 finalists from all over the world.

Sunlife distinguished itself by winning two major trophies: the Best Innovative Action in favour of Sustainable Development award for the Long Beach hotel’s initiatives, in the ‘Local Winners’ category, bringing together individual establishments from all over the world, and the Best Innovative Initiative for the Protection of the Environment award (Public Vote), for the marine conservation centre, in the ‘Corporate Winners’ category, bringing together the largest hotel groups from all over the world.

Sunlife was also nominated for Best Innovative Social Responsibility Initiative 2024, (Public Vote) for the Cancer Ward at Victoria Hospital sponsored by Sunlife. This initiative supports the only paediatric childhood cancer unit in Mauritius, providing essential care, education and empowerment to children and their families.

This is the third time Sunlife has won a trophy at the Hospitality Awards®. The group received the Best Sustainability Initiative award in 2018 for its SUNCARE programme, followed by the Best Sustainability Initiative award in 2021 at Long Beach.

The Best Innovative Action for Sustainable Development award recognises innovative actions in sustainable development for communities, local populations, employees and, tourist sites and natural resources in the hotel industry. The Long Beach Hotel’s remarkable commitment has been recognised. Its flagship initiatives include

– Circular economy: reuse of 20,000 m³ of rubble from an old complex to reduce waste and limit the consumption of materials.

– Renewable energies: transition to a system that heats more than 80% of its water with solar energy, and installation of in-house water treatment and bottling plants.

– Zero plastic: complete elimination of plastic in-room equipment.

– Biodiversity conservation: including the creation of guided botanical trails, home to 3,400 endemic plants, a marine research centre in partnership with the University of Mauritius and Dr David Vaughan in Florida, the installation of beehives in the hotel gardens, and interactive educational initiatives for guests.

– Community involvement: programmes such as ‘Adopt a Tree’, partnerships with local artisans, and the promotion of intelligent agriculture in the face of climate change.

As for the Best Innovative Initiative for the Protection of the Environment, this distinction highlights the profound impact of the marine conservation and educational awareness-raising efforts carried out by Sunlife as part of its ‘marine discovery programme’. Sunlife’s Marine Discovery Programme is a collaborative effort with key partners such as the University of Mauritius, the Australian High Commission and the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre.

Sunlife employs three dedicated marine scientists (two on the east coast and one on the west coast), who actively engage with children and adults in marine conservation. Through interactive workshops, guided tours and educational activities, they have reached over 10,000 participants to date, inspiring a new generation of ocean campaigners.

Sunlife is committed to promoting inclusive education and inspiring young people to become responsible global citizens. Their mascot, Izzy the Bee, leads interactive initiatives, teaching children about waste management, beach protection and environmental care in a fun and engaging way. Sunlife’s commitment extends to over 50 schools and 1,000 pupils through competitions and hands-on learning experiences. These programmes not only raise awareness but also provide a better understanding of marine biodiversity and the importance of conservation.

Ali Abdool, Head of Sustainable Development for the Sunlife Group, welcomed the two awards: ‘These two prestigious prizes testify to our commitment to sustainable and inclusive hospitality, in line with the UN’s 2030 Strategic Plan for Mauritius. Our teams deserve this international recognition for their hard work and creativity. Sunlife will continue to push the boundaries to not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create a positive impact for our communities and environment.
