Chamarel: Where Mauritian Coffee Comes to Life
In the heart of Chamarel’s scenic hills lies a hidden gem: the only commercial coffee plantation in Mauritius. Spearheaded by French coffee expert Thomas Lehoux, the estate is reviving a little-known chapter of the island’s agricultural story—craft coffee, grown and roasted locally.
Every bean here is picked by hand, sun-dried, and roasted on-site. The plantation’s signature Arabica variety, K7, thrives in volcanic soil at just 280m altitude—a global rarity. “It’s an exceptional microclimate,” says Thomas, “and everything is done with care, from plant to cup.”
Chamarel also produces the rare Liberica, a bold, full-bodied coffee with strong character, especially appreciated in Asia. But this plantation is about more than coffee—it’s a model of sustainable agriculture. Agroforestry, biodiversity, natural composting, and zero pesticide use are part of its everyday practices.
The Chamarel Coffee Tour offers more than just tastings. It’s an immersive experience into a unique, handcrafted coffee culture—one that puts Mauritius back on the global coffee map.
