Bel Ombre Vineyard: Mauritius Embarks on a New Wine Adventure

In the southwest of Mauritius, the historic lands of Bel Ombre are witnessing an ambitious transformation: the creation of the island’s first tropical vineyard. Led by Agrïa (ER Group) in partnership with the prestigious Domaine de Montille from Burgundy, this pioneering project aims to place Mauritius on the global wine map while reshaping its agricultural and touristic identity.

From Sugarcane to Sustainable Crops

For centuries, sugarcane defined Bel Ombre. As the industry declined, Agrïa launched a strategy of diversification focused on sustainable, high-value crops: pineapples, palm hearts, coffee, beekeeping, and Chamarel’s artisanal rum. The vineyard is now the most daring step, combining innovation, sustainability, and Mauritian heritage.

A Unique Terroir for Tropical Viticulture

Soil studies conducted by French geologist Yves Hérody revealed that Bel Ombre’s lands — enriched through centuries of cane cultivation — have exceptional potential for viticulture. The first 15 hectares will be planted with Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Touriga Nacional.

The first harvest is expected in 2028, with the inaugural vintage released in 2029. At full capacity, production will reach around 80,000 bottles per year, vinified locally in a modern winery built at Bel Ombre. This short supply chain approach will ensure both quality and reduced carbon footprint.

A Partnership of Excellence

Technical leadership comes from Étienne Bizouard de Montille, heir to one of Burgundy’s most respected wine families, supported by vineyard manager Nicholas Valentinuzzi. Together, they are applying organic and biodynamic practices with the ambitious goal of creating the world’s first organically cultivated tropical vineyard.

A New Chapter for Mauritius

More than a vineyard, this project embodies an economic, cultural, and tourism opportunity. By producing premium wines rooted in its terroir, Mauritius enhances its international appeal and affirms its sustainable tropical Art de Vivre.

When the first bottles are unveiled in 2029, they will represent far more than a vintage: they will tell the story of Bel Ombre’s transformation, Mauritius’ vision, and a bold new era in tropical winemaking.
