World Travel Awards : Maurice décroche huit trophées dans l’océan Indien

World Travel Awards: Mauritius takes eight Indian Ocean titles

Mauritius returned from the 2026 World Travel Awards with eight regional titles, including Indian Ocean’s Leading Wedding Destination. A new recognition for a destination whose tourism appeal rests not only on its hotels and resorts, but on the diversity of the professionals who shape the visitor experience.

On Sunday 27 September, the Indian Ocean tourism industry gathered in the Maldives. Hosted at CROSSROADS Maldives, the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026 brought together leading names from across the region. For Mauritius, the evening ended with eight Indian Ocean titles, alongside a strong showing in the national Mauritius categories.

The title that will naturally attract the most attention is Indian Ocean’s Leading Wedding Destination 2026, awarded to Mauritius. The island was also recognised in the Leading Wedding Resort category, with One&Only Le Saint Géran taking the title.

The double recognition reinforces Mauritius’ long-established position in the wedding and honeymoon segment, where its island setting, high-end hospitality and personalised experiences continue to form an important part of its international tourism appeal.

Recognition beyond hospitality

Mauritius’ regional success, however, extends well beyond hotels and resorts.

Air Mauritius was named Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline – Business Class, while JetPrime received the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport Lounge. These two awards recognise different but complementary parts of the travel experience, from the journey itself to the welcome at the airport.

In hospitality, Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel was named Indian Ocean’s Leading Boutique Hotel, while Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa retained the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Luxury Villa Resort.

The destination management and tour operating sector was also in the spotlight. Mautourco collected two regional titles: Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination Management Company and Indian Ocean’s Leading Tour Operator. The recognition highlights the often less visible role of professionals who design, organise and deliver the experiences visitors discover beyond their hotels.

Taken together, Mauritius’ eight regional titles cover aviation, airport services, boutique hospitality, luxury villas, destination management, tour operating and weddings. The spread is significant: it reflects an ecosystem rather than a single segment of the tourism industry.

A strong showing at national level

The regional awards were complemented by 18 Mauritius’ Leading titles, covering a broad range of businesses and properties.

Among them, Sands Suites Resort & Spa was named Mauritius’ Leading All-Suite Resort, Sugar Beach Leading Beach Resort, Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa Leading Conference Hotel, Constance Belle Mare Plage Leading Family Resort, and LUX* Le Morne Leading Green Resort.

The St. Regis Le Morne Resort collected two titles — Leading Honeymoon Resort and Leading Luxury Resort. Le Méridien Ile Maurice was named Leading Hotel, while the Three Bedroom Beachfront Suite at One&Only Le Saint Géran received the Leading Hotel Suite award. The Royal Villa with Private Pool at The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius, was recognised as Leading Luxury Hotel Villa.

The list also extends beyond the traditional resort landscape, with Avis recognised for car rental, Shamal Travels for online travel agency, Holiday Wonders for tour operating and BlueSky for travel agency services.

This breadth is perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of the 2026 results. The World Travel Awards are not only highlighting the most visible faces of a destination. They are also recognising the different links that make up the tourism chain — transport, airport services, accommodation, travel distribution, destination management and the organisation of experiences.

For Mauritius, the awards come at a significant moment. The ceremony in the Maldives took place on 27 September, on the eve of World Tourism Day, and represented the third stage of the World Travel Awards’ 2026 Grand Tour.

In an Indian Ocean where destinations compete constantly for international attention, the eight regional titles offer a broad snapshot of Mauritius’ tourism positioning. From business-class air travel and airport hospitality to luxury villas, destination management and weddings, the awards touch several of the links that make up the Mauritian visitor experience.

Beyond the trophies themselves, they offer a reminder that the strength of a destination is rarely the work of a single sector. It is built collectively, across an entire tourism ecosystem.
