Après la formidable déclinaison des couleurs de Maurice dans MOTS KOULER paru en 2020, Shakti Callikan continue son exploration du patrimoine mauricien. Cette fois, elle s’est attaquée à la terre de Maurice ou plutôt des terres. Car celle de Mont Choisy n’est pas la même que celle de Midlands ou de Chamarel. Elle expose ses découvertes en ce moment à l’Institut français de Maurice (IFM) et ce jusqu’au 9 décembre sous le titre Terres Marronnes.
L’exposition révèle l’incroyable univers de la terre en la déclinant en diverses couleurs, structures, conceptions, et autres.
Lancé fin 2020 par la Fondation Projet de Société, Lakaz Flambwayan conçoit et mène des programmes pérennes avec la collaboration de ses partenaires culturels, sociaux et éducatifs. « La fondation répond aussi à une nécessité culturelle et assure une dynamique, celle d’œuvrer pour un pays « Vert, Humain, Moderne ». Plus d’une centaine de jeunes ont d’ores et déjà bénéficié des programmes et des ateliers », explique Malenn Oodiah, directeur administratif et artistique de Lakaz Flambwayan.
Piton du Milieu, Midlands, Saint Antoine, Chamarel, Yemen, voici quelques endroits qui ont contribué à donner vie à Terres Marronnes. Ce traçage des lieux permet de s'attarder un peu plus sur l'élément de la terre qui, au final, passe trop souvent inaperçu mais qui est foncièrement lié à notre identité, notre appartenance, et notre histoire collective et insulaire.
Ainsi, avec ce travail à la fois artistique et éducatif, Shakti arrive à dévoiler quelques autres secrets de l’île Maurice, véritable terrain de jeu géologique et mines d’innombrables joyaux. Des procédés de créations et diverses autres informations sur la provenance et les propriétés des terres sont également fournis au public pour qu’ils se passionnent davantage sur le sujet. Pour expliquer son projet, l’artiste révèle : « Mon île me touche, j’ai envie de la toucher à mon tour, j’ai eu envie de creuser. Fouiller, piocher, faire des trous. Chercher, étudier, questionner. Une entrée en matière ».
Soutenu par le National Art Fund, Terres Marronnes propose une escapade qui se veut aussi poétique avec des personnifications ingénieuses de la terre et des propositions pour repenser son usage et son appartenance. Terres Marronnes: an ode to the local soil by Shakti Callikan
After her wonderful declination of the colours of Mauritius in MOTS KOULER, published in 2020, Shakti Callikan is continuing her exploration of Mauritian heritage. This time, she has tackled the land of Mauritius, or rather the lands. The land of Mont Choisy is not the same as that of the Midlands or Chamarel. She is presently exhibiting her discoveries at the Institut français de Maurice (IFM) until 9 December under the title Terres Marronnes.
The exhibition reveals the incredible world of earth, in a variety of colours, structures, designs and more.
Digging, exploring, experimenting: these are the words that shape the dialogue initiated by Terres Marronnes, which offers a multicoloured visual spectacle, with fascinating earthen cookies, vases, pots, plates and various other telluric objects. In addition, the exhibition aims to encourage questions about the environment that surrounds us and the many possibilities it offers. With the artist, we discover how the banal can take on hues we’d never have imagined before, and how we can discover textures we don’t understand in the landscapes we think we know. The exhibition is also a unifying event, as the soil for the various works has been collected from all over the island, bringing us together with snippets and fragments that run the length and breadth of our territory and our daily lives.
Piton du Milieu, Midlands, Saint Antoine, Chamarel, Yemen – these are just some of the places that have helped to bring Terres Marronnes to life. By tracing these places, we’ve been able to take a closer look at the element of land, which all too often goes unnoticed, but which is fundamentally linked to our identity, our sense of belonging, and our collective and island history. So, with this work that is both artistic and educational, Shakti manages to reveal a few more secrets about Mauritius, a veritable geological playground and mine of countless gems. The creative process and other information on the origin and properties of the earth are also provided to the public to pique their interest in the subject. To explain his project, the artist reveals: « My island touches me, and I want to touch it in turn. Dig, dig, dig. Searching, studying, questioning. An introduction to the subject ».
Supported by the National Art Fund, Terres Marronnes offers an escapade that is also poetic, with ingenious personifications of the earth and proposals for rethinking its use and belonging.
