Sunlife annonce deux promotions internes au sein de sa direction

Le groupe hôtelier Sunlife a procédé à deux nominations internes effectives depuis le 1er janvier 2026, dans le cadre de son organisation managériale. Clency Roméo a été nommé Chief Sustainability Officer du groupe, tandis que Jean-Marc Ma-Poon prend la direction des resorts Sugar Beach et La Pirogue en tant que Cluster General Manager du pôle Ouest.

Cette nomination intervient dans une année symbolique pour La Pirogue, établissement emblématique de l’hôtellerie mauricienne qui célèbre son 50ᵉ anniversaire. Les deux hôtels, situés sur la côte ouest de l’île, continueront à évoluer conjointement tout en conservant leurs identités respectives.

Jean-Marc Ma-Poon à la tête de Sugar Beach et La Pirogue

Diplômé de l’École hôtelière de Glion, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon possède une expérience internationale dans le secteur touristique, acquise notamment aux États-Unis, en Europe, en Asie et au Moyen-Orient. De retour à Maurice en 2016, il prend la direction du Long Beach, resort cinq étoiles de la côte est, qu’il dirige pendant cinq ans.

En 2021, il est nommé General Manager du Sugar Beach, à l’issue de la rénovation complète de l’établissement. Sous sa direction, le resort a obtenu plusieurs distinctions internationales, dont le World Travel Award Mauritius Leading Beach Resort à plusieurs reprises, ainsi que des World Luxury Awards dans les catégories « Best Luxury Lifestyle Resort » et « Best Luxury Beach Resort » pour la région de l’océan Indien. En 2024, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon a également été distingué comme « Best General Manager – Indian Ocean Islands » lors des World Luxury Hotel Awards.

Dans ses nouvelles fonctions, il aura pour mission de renforcer la synergie entre Sugar Beach et La Pirogue, qui forment ensemble un complexe hôtelier majeur de la côte ouest, tout en contribuant au positionnement international de la destination mauricienne.

Clency Roméo nommé Chief Sustainability Officer

Clency Roméo cumule plus de 30 ans de carrière dans l’hôtellerie à Maurice et dans la région. Il débute en 1989 à La Pirogue en tant que Chief Steward, avant d’évoluer vers des fonctions de management en restauration et en Food & Beverage. Il est notamment nommé F&B Manager au Touessrok en 2005.

Titulaire d’un diplôme en management de la Cornell University à New York, il a également complété un MBA en International Management. En 2011, il revient à La Pirogue comme Resident Manager, avant d’en devenir General Manager en 2013. Il dirigera par la suite les hôtels Ambre à Maurice et Kanuhura aux Maldives.

En tant que Chief Sustainability Officer, Clency Roméo sera chargé de piloter la stratégie de développement durable du groupe Sunlife. Sa mission portera sur l’intégration des enjeux environnementaux, sociaux et humains dans l’ensemble des opérations, de la gouvernance et de la culture du groupe, en cohérence avec les standards internationaux.

Selon François Eynaud, Chief Executive Officer de Sunlife, ces nominations s’inscrivent dans la volonté du groupe de promouvoir les compétences internes et de reconnaître les parcours professionnels engagés au sein de l’entreprise.

Sunlife announces two internal leadership appointments

The hospitality group Sunlife has announced two internal appointments, effective as of 1 January 2026, as part of its leadership structure. Clency Roméo has been appointed Chief Sustainability Officer of the group, while Jean-Marc Ma-Poon takes over as Cluster General Manager for the West Coast, overseeing Sugar Beach and La Pirogue resorts.

This appointment comes in a milestone year for La Pirogue, one of Mauritius’ most iconic hotels, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Both properties, located on the island’s west coast, will continue to operate in close coordination while maintaining their distinct identities.

Jean-Marc Ma-Poon to lead Sugar Beach and La Pirogue

A graduate of the Glion Institute of Higher Education, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon has built an international career in the tourism and hospitality sector, with professional experience in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He returned to Mauritius in 2016 to head Long Beach, a five-star resort on the east coast, which he managed for five years.

In 2021, he was appointed General Manager of Sugar Beach following the property’s full renovation. Under his leadership, the resort received several international accolades, including the World Travel Award for Mauritius Leading Beach Resort on multiple occasions, as well as World Luxury Awards in the categories of Best Luxury Lifestyle Resort and Best Luxury Beach Resort in the Indian Ocean region. In 2024, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon was also recognised as Best General Manager – Indian Ocean Islands at the World Luxury Hotel Awards.

In his new role, Jean-Marc will be responsible for strengthening synergies between Sugar Beach and La Pirogue, which together form a major hospitality complex on the west coast, while contributing to the international positioning of Mauritius as a destination.

Clency Roméo appointed Chief Sustainability Officer

Clency Roméo brings more than 30 years of experience in the Mauritian and regional hospitality industry. He began his career in 1989 at La Pirogue as Chief Steward before progressing through various management roles in Food & Beverage. In 2005, he was appointed F&B Manager at Le Touessrok.

He holds a Diploma in Management from Cornell University in New York and has more recently completed an MBA in International Management. Returning to La Pirogue in 2011 as Resident Manager, he became General Manager in 2013, before going on to lead Ambre in Mauritius and Kanuhura in the Maldives.

As Chief Sustainability Officer, Clency Roméo will oversee and further develop Sunlife’s sustainability strategy, focusing on the integration of environmental, social and human considerations across operations, governance and corporate culture, in line with international standards.

According to Sunlife Chief Executive Officer François Eynaud, these appointments reflect the group’s commitment to internal talent development and recognition of long-standing professional contributions.
