  • respect mutuel

« On se sent considéré. On peut s’exprimer. »

Sandy Manbode: The Art of Detail and Guest Loyalty at La Pirogue

23 years of dedication to a deeply human guest experience

For over two decades, Sandy Manbode has embodied a rare kind of loyalty within Mauritian hospitality. As a Guest Profile Officer at La Pirogue, she works behind the scenes to ensure that every guest feels expected, recognised—almost at home. A discreet yet essential role that reveals the true soul of this iconic resort.

A journey that began at the front desk

Sandy’s story with La Pirogue began in 2001, when she joined as a trainee straight out of hotel school. A year later, she was officially recruited as a receptionist.

At the time, reception teams handled everything—from guest check-ins to cashier duties. But soon, an opportunity arose. A position opened, and Sandy stepped into what would become her defining role: Guest Profile Officer.

A position she has held ever since.

The invisible art of anticipation

Behind this understated title lies a pivotal function in shaping the guest experience. Sandy is the one who knows guests before they even arrive.

She carefully verifies and enriches guest profiles:

  • personal details and contact information
  • travel history and repeat visits
  • preferences and special requirements

Every day, she compiles detailed reports shared across departments. The result is seamless: guests arrive to find their preferred room, familiar touches, and personalised attention already in place.

“When the guest arrives, everything is already prepared for them.”

At La Pirogue, personalisation is not a promise—it is a system, a culture, a memory. And Sandy is one of its key custodians.

Guests who return… and remember

With an average of two to three repeat guests arriving daily, loyalty is deeply rooted in the resort’s DNA.

But beyond the numbers, there are stories.

Italian guests who look for Sandy by name.
Returning visitors who remember her years later.
A Bulgarian couple who instantly recognised her upon their return.

“Even with language barriers, we always find a way to understand each other.”

Through a mix of languages, gestures, and even digital tools, Sandy builds connections that go far beyond transactional service.

Evolving with time, staying true to its spirit

Over 23 years, Sandy has witnessed La Pirogue evolve—through major renovations, younger teams, and the integration of advanced technologies.

Yet, the essence remains unchanged.

“Today we work faster, with better tools. But the spirit is still the same.”

Technology enhances efficiency, but it is the human touch that defines the experience.

The La Pirogue spirit: a family above all

What has kept Sandy here for more than two decades is not just the job—it is the atmosphere.

“Here, we are one family, regardless of department.”

In an industry often defined by turnover, this sense of belonging is rare. It is sustained by strong values:

  • employee recognition
  • open communication
  • team cohesion
  • mutual respect

“You feel valued. You are heard.”

Hospitality as memory

Over the years, Sandy has learned a fundamental truth: hospitality is about remembering.

Remembering a name.
A preference.
A detail.

At La Pirogue, this memory creates emotional continuity—turning stays into lasting relationships.

“Even after years, we recognise our guests. And they recognise us too.”

50 years of La Pirogue: a shared pride

For Sandy, celebrating the resort’s 50th anniversary is deeply meaningful.

She recalls the 40th anniversary as an emotional milestone—and believes the upcoming celebration will be even more powerful.

“I am proud to work in a hotel that is reaching 50 years.”

A longevity built on both guest and employee loyalty.

A message to the next generation

To those considering a career in hospitality, Sandy offers a simple yet grounded message:

patience, perseverance, and steady growth.

“You have to move forward step by step.”

Because behind the elegance of service lies a demanding—but profoundly human—profession.

For Kamla, true service cannot be taught solely through manuals. “You must love this job. Service must come from the heart, with sincerity and a natural smile.” Today, she acts as a mentor—often a maternal figure—to younger staff, navigating generational change while firmly upholding values of respect, responsibility and genuine human connection.

Passing on Knowledge to the Next Generation

Kamla continues to train interns and hospitality students, including university graduates.
Leadership, customer interaction, presence, confidence—everything is taught through practice and example.

“La Pirogue is my university,” she says with pride. “I never went to university, but here I learned three languages: German, Italian and Mandarin.”

Her commitment has earned her internal awards and national recognition—moments she describes as deeply emotional and symbolic of a lifetime of dedication.

La Pirogue Mauritius: A Second Home for Over 40 Years

When asked what defines the soul of La Pirogue, Kamla answers without hesitation:
“It’s the people. We are the soul of La Pirogue.”

As the resort celebrates its 50 years, Kamla reflects on the extraordinary coincidence of still being present for this milestone—an employee who has personally lived almost the entire history of the hotel.

A Message for the 50th Anniversary of La Pirogue

To guests, her message is simple and heartfelt:
“Keep coming back to La Pirogue.”

To colleagues and future generations:
“Everything you learn here is a treasure. La Pirogue is a university.”

Through Kamla Seeroomben’s journey, La Pirogue Mauritius reveals what truly sustains an iconic hotel: loyalty, humanity, and a deep-rooted culture of service passed from one generation to the next.
