L’art en tant que conteur d’une culture, de paysages, de la langue, et bien plus encore, telle fut plus ou moins l’approche artistique du fascinant Vaco Baissac. Cet artiste mauricien a laissé une empreinte significative sur la scène culturelle, tant au niveau local qu’international, grâce à son talent illimité, son amour pour les divers aspects de l’île Maurice, et son extraordinaire créativité.
Décédé le 4 février 2023, il a certes quitté ce monde sur le plan physique, mais toute son énergie créatrice continue de vivre à travers son incroyable archive d’œuvres en tous genres, où couleurs débordantes et lignes folles s’harmonisent ou s’effritent pour capturer toute l’essence de l’île, de sa langue, et de son paysage unique, riche en détail et spécificités.
Ainsi, pendant 10 mois, le Caudan Arts Centre propose de faire découvrir ce monument artistique au grand public à travers une exposition intitulée « Retrospektiv Vaco », commencée le 1er décembre et qui se prolongera jusqu'au 30 septembre de l'année prochaine.
La Retrospektiv Vaco offre une formidable opportunité de retrouver l’île Maurice à travers les siècles, tout en admirant des œuvres apaisantes qui rappellent le côté paradisiaque du territoire et en s’enrichissant d’une part de notre patrimoine.
Caudan Arts Centre honours the creative genius Vaco Baissac
Art as a storyteller of culture, landscape, language and much more was more or less the artistic approach of the fascinating Vaco Baissac. This Mauritian artist left a significant mark on the cultural scene, both locally and internationally, thanks to his boundless talent, his love for the various aspects of Mauritius, and his extraordinary creativity.
Although he passed away on 4 February 2023, all his creative energy lives on through his incredible archive of works of all kinds, where vibrant colours and crazy lines harmonise or crumble to capture the essence of the island, its language and its unique landscape, rich in detail and specificity.
For the next 10 months, the Caudan Arts Centre will be showcasing this artistic monument to the general public in an exhibition entitled ‘Retrospektiv Vaco’, which opened on 1 December and runs until 30 September next year. The exhibition explores the themes of nature, women and, of course, the Creole language in Vaco’s work, while also providing an insight into the artist’s eventful life. Painting, poetry, drawing, stained glass, ceramics and bronze, Vaco was an enthusiastic jack-of-all-trades who knew how to transform the simplicity of his surroundings, including the local territory, into works of art that still emanate today with a bewitching luminosity.
Retrospektiv Vaco offers a wonderful opportunity to rediscover Mauritius through the centuries while admiring soothing works that recall the island’s paradisiacal side and enrich our heritage.
