Depuis le 15 juillet, la vie reprend dans certains de nos hôtels. Une bouffée d’air pour le tourisme mais aussi la joie de nos visiteurs tellement « heureux d’être au paradis ». Une famille britannique et un médecin mauricien, actuellement aux LUX* Grand Gaube, ont partagé en exclusivité à voya-g.com leurs émotions de retrouver l’île Maurice. De bon augure pour le reste de la saison touristique.
Protocole sanitaire oblige, les interviews ont été réalisées par téléphone grâce à l’amabilité d’Elvis Follet, Cluster Public Relations Manager. Nos visiteurs se sont prêté au jeu et bienveillamment partagé leurs expériences. Pour la famille Grace, Katy, James et leur fils Oscar, venir à l’île Maurice était comme une évidence. Originaire de la Grande-Bretagne, elle vit actuellement à Dubaï et a profité du congé de l’Eid-ul-Adha pour passer des vacances. Elle a choisi le soleil mauricien pour y être déjà venue au mois d’août 2019 mais aussi pour ne pas avoir à confronter la foule en Europe.
« Ce sont nos premières vacances de l’ère Covid-19. Les deux semaines passées au LUX* Grand Gaube sont un souvenir mémorable qui nous a donné envie de revenir. Et puis il y a le climat mauricien et même si on est en hiver et que le soleil n’est pas toujours là, c’est si agréable » confie Katy.
Strict contrôle sanitaire
Les conditions sanitaires strictes imposées de part et d’autre en raison de la pandémie n’ont pas découragé la famille Grace qui y a vu, au contraire, une garantie de pouvoir voyager en toute sécurité.
« Tout au long du trajet il y a un strict contrôle sanitaire qui rassure. Certes, cela rallonge le check-in mais après le vol se passe admirablement bien. À l’arrivée à Maurice, on a été très bien reçu à l’aéroport, le personnel est formidable et les tests PCR se sont déroulés sans problème. À l’hôtel, le management et le staff, nous ont accueillis et ont été très coopératifs. On s’est senti tout de suite à la maison ».
Caroline Hu, Guest Experience Supervisor de l’hôtel a été aux petits soins avec les Grace, assure Katy. « Caroline veille à ce que tout se passe bien. On se sent en sécurité et on passe de vraies vacances en dépit du masque que l’on porte dans les espaces publics. De toute façon c’est désormais le « way of life ». Ce qui est réconfortant c’est qu’on est privilégié de passer des vacances exclusives et d’avoir la plage à soi. Vraiment le paradis ».
La famille étant à Maurice pour seulement neuf jours, elle n’aura pas l’occasion d’aller visiter le pays. Ce sera pour la prochaine fois
Gens bienveillants
Pour la Dr Ameera Paurobally, les circonstances sont un peu différentes. Elle revient au pays après quinze en Belgique où elle a étudié puis travaillé. Originaire de Curepipe, cette chirurgienne-dentiste compte ouvrir son propre cabinet bientôt. Le retour était prévu depuis début 2020 mais renvoyé une première fois en raison du début de l’épidémie de Covid-19. La seconde tentative initiée au début de cette année connaît le même sort. C’est donc avec joie qu’elle a accueilli la réouverture des frontières.
Pour elle également, c’est un retour au paradis. « Le trajet n’a pas été stressant. Je suis arrivé trois heures à l’avance à l’aéroport et il n’y avait grand monde à l’aéroport de Bruxelles. Là-bas, comme à Dubaï et à Maurice, c’est le même protocole avec des gens bienveillants. Le vol était super-agréable, avec un siège vide à côté. On se sent en sécurité ».
« Travail à la plage »
Elle souligne le bel accueil reçu à l’aéroport de Plaisance. Comme la famille Grace, elle a pris une voiture privée spécialement aménagée. « C’était bien aéré et il y avait un plexiglas entre chauffeur et passager. Ce protocole est aussi présent à l’hôtel avec en plus du gel hydroalcoolique et des masques à disposition ».
La Dr Paurobally note que le personnel n’a pas d’appréhension même si « on peut avoir une crainte que « l’étranger » pourrait être porteur du virus ». « Le directeur avait raison de dire « Bienvenue à la maison » ; on se sent vraiment chez soi ». Pour elle, la quarantaine est plutôt du « travail à la plage » car elle a encore des choses à faire. Mais elle ne pouvait pas rêver de meilleur bureau. « Ce sont des vacances au paradis ». En attendant d’ouvrir bientôt son cabinet.
"Happy to be in paradise", tourists testify
The partial reopening of the borders, so much awaited but also feared, has brought a breath of fresh air to tourism and the Mauritian hotel industry. The visitors are obviously few, but they are overflowing with enthusiasm and so « happy to be in paradise ». A British family and a Mauritian doctor, currently staying at the LUX* Grand Gaube, shared exclusively with voya-g.com their feelings about returning to Mauritius. A good omen for the rest of the tourist season.

Our visitors lent themselves to the game and kindly shared their experiences. For the Grace family, Katy, James, and their son Oscar coming to Mauritius was an obvious choice. Originally from Great Britain, they currently live in Dubai and took advantage of the Eid-ul-Adha vacation to spend some time on vacation. She chose the Mauritian sunshine because she has been there before in August 2019, but also because she didn’t want to have to deal with the crowds in Europe.
« This is our first vacation of the Covid-19 era. The two weeks spent at LUX* Grand Gaube are a memorable memory that made us want to come back. And then there is the Mauritian climate and even if it is winter and the sun is not always there, it is so pleasant » confides Katy.
Strict sanitary control
The strict sanitary conditions imposed on both sides due to the pandemic did not discourage the Grace family, who saw it, on the contrary, as a guarantee of safe travel.
« All along the way, there is a strict sanitary control that reassures. Of course, this lengthens the check-in time, but afterward, the flight goes beautifully. On arrival in Mauritius, we were very well received at the airport, the staff is great and the PCR tests went smoothly. At the hotel, the management and the staff welcomed us and were very cooperative. We felt at home right away.
Caroline Hu, the Guest Experience Supervisor at the hotel, was very attentive to Grace’s needs, Katy says. « Caroline makes sure everything goes smoothly. We feel safe and we have a real vacation despite the mask we wear in public areas. In any case, it is now the « way of life ». What is comforting is that we are privileged to have an exclusive vacation and to have the beach to ourselves. Truly paradise ». As the family is in Mauritius for only nine days, they will not have the opportunity to visit the country. It will be for the next time.
Caring people
For Dr. Ameera Paurobally, the circumstances are a little different. She is returning home after 15 years in Belgium where she studied and worked. Originally from Curepipe, this dental surgeon plans to open her practice soon. The return was planned since the beginning of 2020 but postponed the first time because of the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic. The second attempt, initiated at the beginning of this year, has the same fate. It is therefore with joy that she welcomed the reopening of the borders.
For her too, it is a return to paradise. « The journey was not stressful. I arrived at the airport three hours early and there were not many people at the airport in Brussels. There, as in Dubai and Mauritius, it’s the same protocol with friendly people. The flight was very pleasant, with an empty seat next to us. You feel safe.
Working from the beach
She emphasizes the warm welcome she received at Plaisance airport. Like the Grace family, she took a specially equipped private car. « It was well ventilated and there was plexiglass between driver and passenger. This protocol is also present at the hotel with the addition of hydroalcoholic gel and masks available. »
Dr. Paurobally notes that the staff is not apprehensive even though « there may be a fear that the ‘stranger’ could be carrying the virus. » « The director was right to say ‘Welcome home’; it does feel like home. » For her, the quarantine is more like « working from the beach » because she still has things to do. But she couldn’t have asked for a better office. “It’s a vacation in paradise”. Till she opens her practice soon.
