La culture est un facteur crucial dans le développement social. C’est à partir de ce postulat qu’a été lancé Lakaz Flambwayan à Medine Bambous. Lakaz Flambwayan, qui doit son nom à l’allée de flamboyants, a pour mission de favoriser l’accès aux arts et à la culture à des jeunes et moins jeunes de la région ouest allant d’Albion à Flic en Flac et au-delà.
Lancé fin 2020 par la Fondation Projet de Société, Lakaz Flambwayan conçoit et mène des programmes pérennes avec la collaboration de ses partenaires culturels, sociaux et éducatifs. « La fondation répond aussi à une nécessité culturelle et assure une dynamique, celle d’œuvrer pour un pays « Vert, Humain, Moderne ». Plus d’une centaine de jeunes ont d’ores et déjà bénéficié des programmes et des ateliers », explique Malenn Oodiah, directeur administratif et artistique de Lakaz Flambwayan.
Niché dans un écrin de verdure, ce bâtiment laissé à l’abandon depuis bien des années a été mis à disposition de la Fondation Projet de Société par la compagnie Medine. Il a connu une seconde naissance pendant le confinement. Les bénévoles ont travaillé d’arrache-pied pour faire de ce lieu, un endroit vivant, un espace dédié à l’art. Ces terres autrefois jugées arides et infertiles ont été métamorphosées en un petit coin de paradis. Sur les lieux, on y retrouve plusieurs pôles d’activités tels que le coin médicinal, le « zardin drom », la pépinière, le kiosque à palabre, le coin sculpture, le coin recyclage et « Mo Bibliotek ».
L’adresse est également propice à la créativité, à la détente et à la découverte de talents insulaires : amateurs et professionnels. Quel que soit le domaine de prédilection, jardinage, peinture, sculpture, photographie ou menuiserie, Lakaz Flambwayan veut avant tout être espace de liberté consacré à l’art.
« Ce fut un pari risqué en cette période de crise sanitaire, mais un pari réussi jusqu’ici. En dix mois d’existence, cet espace culturel a déjà séduit plus d’un et a attiré les artistes locaux qui s’y pressent pour y exposer leurs œuvres ou animer des ateliers destinés à différentes tranches d’âge avec une importance particulière accordée aux jeunes publics. La Fondation ouvre aussi ses portes tout au long de l’année à tous les artistes mauriciens désireux de faire connaître leurs œuvres » assure le directeur.
« Le projet de départ était de faire de ce lieu une école de photographie pour les enfants de la localité et des régions avoisinantes, mais nous avons par la suite décidé d’élargir les activités et de proposer d’autres ateliers. Lakaz Flamboyant est avant tout un espace de rencontre entre les artistes et de partage. Des débats ainsi que divers ateliers de formations sont animés par des artistes et acteurs sociaux. Une trentaine d’ateliers ont été organisés pendant ces dix mois et nous avons accueilli plus d’une cinquantaine d’artistes connus comme Gaël Froget, Nanda Narainen, Kan Chan Kin, Denis Antoine (sculpteur de métal), Lætitia Rousselin parmi tant d’autres. Je dois dire que les retombées sont plutôt positives », se réjouit Malenn Oodiah.

Lakaz Flambwayan: a space dedicated to art and culture
Culture is a crucial factor in social development. This is the premise on which Lakaz Flabwayan was launched in Medine Bambous. Lakaz Flabwayan, named after the alley of flamboyants, has the mission to provide access to arts and culture to young and old in the western region from Albion to Flic en Flac and beyond.
Launched at the end of 2020 by the Projet de Société Foundation, Lakaz Flambwayan designs and runs sustainable programmes with the collaboration of its cultural, social and educational partners. « The foundation also responds to a cultural need and ensures a dynamic, that of working for a « Green, Human, Modern » country. More than a hundred young people have already benefited from the programmes and workshops, » explains Malenn Oodiah, administrative and artistic director of Lakaz Flambwayan.
Nestled in a green setting, the building, which had been abandoned for many years, was made available to the Projet de Société Foundation by the Medine company. It was given a second birth during the confinement. Volunteers worked hard to make this place a living space dedicated to art. These lands, once considered arid and infertile, have been transformed into a little corner of paradise. On the premises, there are several activity centres such as the medicinal corner, the « zardin drom », the nursery, the palaver kiosk, the sculpture corner, the recycling corner and the « Mo Bibliotek ».
The place is also conducive to creativity, relaxation and the discovery of island talents: amateurs and professionals. Whatever the field of predilection, gardening, painting, sculpture, photography or carpentry, Lakaz Flambwayan wants above all to be a space of freedom devoted to art.
« It was a risky gamble in this period of the sanitary crisis, but a successful one so far. In its ten months of existence, this cultural space has already seduced many and attracted local artists who flock there to exhibit their works or to run workshops for different age groups, with a particular emphasis on young audiences. The Foundation also opens its doors throughout the year to all Mauritian artists who wish to show their work, » says the director.
« The original plan was to use the place as a photography school for children from the locality and surrounding areas, but we later decided to expand the activities and offer other workshops. Lakaz Flamboyant is first and foremost a space for artists to meet and share. Debates and various training workshops are led by artists and social actors. About thirty workshops have been organised during these ten months and we have welcomed more than fifty well-known artists such as Gaël Froget, Nanda Narainen, Kan Chan Kin, Denis Antoine (metal sculptor), Lætitia Rousselin among many others. I must say that the results are quite positive, » says Malenn Oodiah.
