Sunlife: François Eynaud Hands Over to Joelle Edwards-Tonks

The Sunlife Excellence Awards 2026 took on a special significance this year. Held on Friday 18 September at La Pirogue, the event celebrated the achievements of Sunlife teams while also marking an important transition for the group, as François Eynaud prepares to hand over the role of CEO to Joelle Edwards-Tonks.

Just days before the end of his tenure, François Eynaud was taking part in one of his final major events as CEO of Sunlife. From 1 October 2026, Joelle Edwards-Tonks will officially take over the leadership of the group.

A transition prepared over 18 months

The evening was attended by Guillaume Dalais, Group Chief Executive of CIEL, together with representatives from Sunlife’s various hotels and business units: Sugar Beach, Long Beach, La Pirogue, Ambre, The Bay Club at Anahita, the Life in Yellow boutiques, Île aux Cerfs, AGL and the corporate office.

Several members of the executive team paid tribute to François Eynaud and his contribution to Sunlife’s development. Varuna Ramlagun, Chief Human Resources Officer, and Tommy Wong, Chief Financial Officer, spoke about the years they had worked alongside him, highlighting his leadership and commitment to the teams.

Guillaume Dalais also expressed CIEL’s appreciation for François Eynaud’s contribution to the development of Sunlife, the strengthening of its corporate culture and the group’s transformation.

The transition has been carefully prepared. It follows an 18-month process carried out alongside François Eynaud, designed to ensure a progressive handover and continuity in Sunlife’s strategy and ambitions.

Joelle Edwards-Tonks takes the next step

With more than 26 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Joelle Edwards-Tonks brings an international career as well as extensive knowledge of Sunlife and the Mauritian market to her new role.

Her career has included positions with major international hospitality groups such as Four Seasons, Shangri-La and Oetker Hotels. She joined Sunlife in Mauritius in 2020 as Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, during an important period of transformation for the group.

She notably led Sunlife’s rebranding and repositioning, helping redefine the group’s identity and market positioning. Her responsibilities subsequently expanded into operations when she was appointed Chief Commercial and Operations Officer. Her appointment as CEO therefore follows several years of direct involvement in Sunlife’s commercial and operational transformation.

Celebrating excellence across the group

Beyond the leadership transition, the Sunlife Excellence Awards remain a celebration of the teams and their contribution to the group’s performance.

Awards were based on a range of criteria, including performance indicators, monthly reporting, sustainability, ideas and innovation.

Among this year’s winners, Ambre received the Best People Engagement Award and was also recognised for its Operational Transformation project, the Culinary Intelligence Platform. Sugar Beach & La Pirogue received the Best Guest Experience Award, while Long Beach & La Pirogue were recognised for Best Quality Standards.

Long Beach also received the Best Sustainable Business Unit Award, while La Pirogue won the Best Digital Adoption Award and the Chairman’s Award.

In the innovation categories, Estella by Sunlife was recognised for its idea focused on reinventing the customer experience. Other projects honoured included Izzylearn: Sunlife Talent Passport, Digital Overtime Pre-Approval and the Reusable Packaging initiative.

Held at La Pirogue, Sunlife’s first hotel, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the evening brought together recognition of achievements, appreciation for a departing CEO and the beginning of a new chapter for the group.
