Pour marquer son quart de millénaire, le Domaine de Labourdonnais dévoile « 250 ans en 25 récits folkloriques », un ouvrage inédit retraçant les histoires marquantes ayant façonné ce lieu emblématique de l’île Maurice. Bien plus qu’un recueil de récits, ce livre est une célébration du patrimoine historique et culturel, un pont entre les générations passées, présentes et futures qui ont forgé l’âme du Domaine.
Ainsi, le jeudi 5 décembre dernier, les jardins du Château de Labourdonnais ont accueilli un événement spécial : le lancement du livre collector « 250 ans en 25 récits folkloriques ». Cet ouvrage propose un voyage captivant dans le temps, de 1774 à 2024, à travers 25 récits soigneusement sélectionnés. Inspirées d’anecdotes et de souvenirs transmis par d’anciens résidents et employés du Domaine, ces histoires forment une fresque vivante de sa mémoire collective.
Parmi ces récits, on découvre des épisodes fascinants tels qu’un éléphant fugitif ayant jadis arpenté le Domaine, les traces laissées par des cyclones mythiques, ou encore l’histoire de Marius, l’infirmier de l’hôpital de Labourdonnais, qui parcourait les maisons en calèche. Ces fragments d’histoire, empreints d’émotion et d’authenticité, soulignent l’importance de préserver et de transmettre cet héritage précieux.
Ce projet, qui se veut inclusif, met également en lumière le talent des artistes locaux. Vingt-cinq artistes mauriciens, parmi lesquels Valentine Montocchio, Cendrine Bolaram, Olive Local, Ameerah Koheeallee, Evan Sohun, Jean-Yves l’Onflé, et bien d’autres encore, ont illustré chaque récit. Leurs œuvres, empreintes de sensibilité et d’originalité, offrent une interprétation artistique inédite des histoires relatées.
Pour prolonger l’expérience, une exposition immersive a également été conçue. Les illustrations du livre ont été reproduites sur des structures exposées dans les jardins du Château le temps du vernissage. Par la suite, ces œuvres seront disséminées entre le Château de Labourdonnais et le Quartier des Serres, formant un itinéraire captivant qui invite les visiteurs à redécouvrir ces lieux emblématiques tout en plongeant dans leurs récits associés.
« À travers ce livre, nous célébrons l’histoire, l’art et l’humain en mettant en lumière l’âme vivante de ce lieu, façonnée par ceux qui l’ont animé. Ce projet s’inscrit comme un hommage aux hommes et aux femmes qui ont marqué l’identité du Domaine au fil des siècles, tout en affirmant notre engagement à préserver cet héritage et à imaginer de nouvelles perspectives pour l’avenir », souligne Jean-François Lagesse, Managing Director du groupe DDL.

To mark its quarter of a millennium, Domaine de Labourdonnais is unveiling’ 250 years in 25 folk tales’, a ground-breaking book tracing the key stories that have shaped this iconic Mauritian site. Much more than a collection of stories, this book is a celebration of the historical and cultural heritage, a bridge between past, present, and future generations who have forged the soul of the Domaine.
The gardens of Château de Labourdonnais hosted a special event last Thursday 5 December : the launch of the collector’s book ‘250 Years in 25 Folk Tales’. The book takes readers on a captivating journey back in time, from 1774 to 2024, through 25 carefully selected stories. Inspired by anecdotes and memories passed on by former residents and employees of the estate, these stories form a living fresco of its collective memory.
The stories include fascinating episodes such as the fugitive elephant that once roamed the estate, the traces left by mythical cyclones, and the story of Marius, the Labourdonnais hospital nurse who used to ride through the houses in a horse-drawn carriage. These fragments of history, imbued with emotion and authenticity, underline the importance of preserving and passing on this precious heritage.
This inclusive project also highlights the talent of local artists. Twenty-five Mauritian artists, including Valentine Montocchio, Cendrine Bolaram, Olive Local, Ameerah Koheeallee, Evan Sohun, Jean-Yves l’Onflé and many others, have illustrated each story. Their works imbued with sensitivity and originality, offer an original artistic interpretation of the stories narrated.
An immersive exhibition has also been designed. The illustrations in the book have been reproduced on structures displayed in the gardens of the Château for the duration of the opening. Subsequently, these works will be scattered between the Château de Labourdonnais and the Quartier des Serres, forming a captivating itinerary that invites visitors to rediscover these iconic places while immersing themselves in their associated stories.
