Comptoir du Monde: A Decade of Audacity and Humanity at the Heart of Mauritian Travel

In Curepipe on Friday evening, the air feels soft and warm, filled with conversations, familiar faces, and a quiet, palpable emotion. Under the gentle lights of the Dodo Club, partners, colleagues and friends gather to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Comptoir du Monde, an agency that has become, over the years, a discreet yet essential reference for Mauritian travellers.

An agency born out of adversity

When Fabien Lefébure, CEO of Solis, takes the floor, he does so less to deliver a formal speech than to tell a story. The story of an agency born out of adversity — shaped by the belief that human values can, at times, rebuild what crises attempt to break.

To understand Comptoir du Monde, one must return to 1974, when Solis — then Budget Tours — was still a modest company, but one that also included the travel agency Voyageur. Year after year, the structure grew, took bold risks, and ventured into emerging markets such as India and Russia. The 2000s then brought the company under the umbrella of the BAI group, a promising trajectory until the well-known collapse of that conglomerate.

“It was impossible to envision continuing Solis without continuing the adventure with the team from Voyageur,” Fabien recalls before an attentive audience. And so, in 2015, amid the turmoil, the idea of relaunching a new agency emerged: Comptoir du Monde. More a rebirth than a creation. A gesture, above all, of loyalty and trust.

A close-knit team

The gamble was enormous: 60% of the business depended on BAI at the time. Yet surrounded by a close-knit team — Patrice, Nashreen, and others who would soon join — Fabien placed his faith in collective strength. And the risk transformed, from day one, into success. Comptoir du Monde quickly found its pace, its tone and, most importantly, its identity.

Today, the agency proudly embraces its status as a boutique travel agency — small by choice, precise by vocation. From its familiar corner in Curepipe, it cultivates a human-centred approach, crafting each journey as a unique, tailor-made experience. Clients come seeking expertise, of course, but also an attentiveness that has become rare.

Rodrigues

In the evening’s speech, the roadmap unfolds: specialised packages — cruises, Umrah, religious pilgrimages — strengthened synergies with Solis in operations and logistics, and a clear shift towards digitalisation. A new showcase website has just been launched (https://www.comptoirdumonde.mu/), serving as the first step toward future digital tools designed for Mauritian travellers on the move.

And then, there is Rodrigues. Solis recently opened an office on the island, reconnecting with a deep family history. Comptoir du Monde will accompany this new chapter, with the ambition of improving access and enriching travel experiences to the sister island.

Astory still in the making

Around Fabien Lefébure, the team listens, smiles, and at times seems moved. Patrice, Nashreen, Devisha, Sophie, as well as Solis team members — Zahira, Marjo, Doriane, Shanon, Dev and many others — are thanked one by one. Because the agency’s success rests, above all, on people rather than numbers.

As the evening draws to a close, one certainty remains: Comptoir du Monde does not simply look back on ten successful years. It looks forward to a story still in the making — one built on loyalty, dedication, and a distinctive, almost artisanal way of guiding Mauritians on their journeys.
