CIEL FERNEY Trail 2026: 4,200 participants reconnect with nature

On September 12, Ferney will host the 19th edition of the CIEL Ferney  Trail. Four courses, 4,200 participants, more than Rs 1.1 million raised for three NGOs and two joëlettes on the trail: more than a sporting competition, the event has become a celebration of nature, solidarity, inclusion and the great outdoors.

At FERNEY, trail running is as much about taking in the scenery as it is about crossing the finish line. Winding through fields, mountains and rolling hills, with views stretching towards the sea, the CIEL Ferney Trail offers an immersive experience in one of the most remarkable landscapes of southeastern Mauritius. For its 19th edition, the event confirms its popularity with 4,200 participants registered across four courses: the Sunlife 5km Fun Run, CIEL 10km, Bank One 18km and C-Care 35km.

Spectacular views

The first rendezvous will be on September 9 at Nouvelle Usine in Floréal, where participants will collect their race numbers. Three days later, on September 12, the former Ferney sugar mill will once again become the beating heart of this celebration of outdoor sport.

The most experienced runners will take on the 35km C-Care course, passing through the upper section of Lion Mountain before continuing across the hills of Ferney. The Sunlife 5km Fun Run is designed particularly for families and children, with an accessible route through pastures and across a river. The 10km and 18km courses offer intermediate challenges, combining sporting effort with spectacular views of the mountains and Grand Port lagoon.

None of the four routes enters the conservation zone of the Ferney Valley forest.

“The CIEL Ferney Trail is part of Mauritius’ sporting landscape, but it goes well beyond competition,” says Percy Driver, Race Director. Its true spirit, he believes, lies in the beauty and diversity of the courses, as well as in the atmosphere of sharing that allows families, friends, runners and supporters to enjoy an experience in nature together.

Sport and solidarity

This human dimension has become one of the defining features of the CIEL Ferney Trail. During the registration period, participants and members of the public could make donations through the ROAG platform to support several organisations. Around Rs 1.135 million was raised for Breast Cancer Care, APEIM and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The funds will be handed over following the prize-giving ceremony on September 12.

Inclusion is another important part of the trail’s identity. In 2017, the CIEL FERNEY Trail introduced the joëlette to Mauritius, enabling a person with reduced mobility to experience the adventure of trail running on challenging terrain. This year, two joëlettes will take part in the CIEL 10km, carrying young para-athlete Kiara and young Alexandre.

One is made available through RodTrail, a Rodrigues-based association, while the second belongs to Rando Trail et Nature (RTN). It was donated to the association by the CIEL Ferney Trail in 2024. Carried by teams of volunteers, the two specialised chairs will allow their passengers to discover Ferney’s landscapes surrounded by thousands of runners and walkers.

Ferney Tropical Agrihood

The trail will also offer a glimpse of Ferney’s future. Participants will be able to see the estate’s new entrance and the redesigned Grand Port road, developed with safety, environmental considerations and flood management in mind.

This transformation is part of Ferney Tropical Agrihood, a long-term integrated development project planned to unfold progressively over twenty years. Sustainable agriculture, an eco-village, low-density housing, ecotourism, conservation and local development are all part of the vision. Of the estate’s 3,000 hectares, only 6% will be built upon, mainly on former sugar-cane land.

The same philosophy is reflected in the organisation of the trail. Participants will once again receive their race numbers without the traditional sponsor-filled race pack, reducing unnecessary bags and packaging. They will also be required to bring their own reusable containers for the free water refill stations.

Around the former sugar mill, the Trail Village will extend the celebration with activities, the Kids’ Corner, awards, local producers and a complimentary Mauritian lunch. Women farmers from Zardin SELA will also sell vegetables grown without chemical products in their Ferney fields.

Organised and principally sponsored by the CIEL Group, in collaboration with Ferney Ltd and its partners, the CIEL Ferney Trail once again brings together sporting achievement, nature, conviviality and solidarity on the same paths.
