Krishna Beeharee, the Art of Elevating Mauritian Flavours
Cooking is not difficult, but it must be done with heart. Food has a soul.” For Krishna Beeharee, Executive Chef at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa, this belief is far more than a motto—it is the guiding principle of his entire career. Every dish carries a part of his story, rooted in childhood memories from Brisée Verdière, where family cooking laid the foundations of his culinary identity.
As a child, he spent hours beside his mother, shaping faratas, preparing rougailles, trimming leafy greens and cooking dried peas. This sincere, everyday Mauritian cuisine shaped his palate and instilled deep respect for ingredients. At a time when being a chef lacked prestige, his parents envisioned a career in the police force, like his brothers. Krishna, however, had already chosen his path.
He enrolled at the Hotel School to obtain an NTC Level 3 in Culinary Arts, working as a mason on weekends to fund his studies. After graduating, he joined the Mauritian hospitality industry and steadily rose through the ranks, from trainee to Chef de Partie.
An International Career of Excellence
In 2005, Krishna Beeharee moved to the United Arab Emirates, and later to Qatar, where his career took on an international dimension. In Doha, within The Torch Hospitality Group, he spent fourteen years progressing to the role of Cluster Executive Director, overseeing the culinary operations of several hotels and a high-performance sports academy. Leading a brigade of 200 chefs from 29 nationalities, he developed a cuisine defined by precision, structure and multicultural influences.
One defining milestone was the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Responsible for catering at one of the stadiums, his teams served up to 25,000 meals per match day, catering to players, officials and VIPs. This intense experience sharpened his expertise in large-scale operations, logistics and elite sports nutrition.
Returning Home to Mauritius
After nearly two decades abroad, Krishna chose to return to Mauritius. From his first conversation with the management of Victoria Beachcomber, he felt an immediate alignment of values and vision. Today, he leads a close-knit, creative brigade and channels his international experience into a modern Mauritian cuisine that is both globally relevant and deeply rooted in local culture.
“We now have access to an incredible diversity of products,” he explains. “It allows us to create cuisine that meets international standards while highlighting what makes Mauritius unique.” He believes certain dishes, such as vindaye octopus, deserve recognition as national culinary icons.
A Distinctive and Responsible Gastronomy
At Victoria Beachcomber, Krishna Beeharee oversees a diverse culinary offering, from Moris Beef to La Casa, Le Superbe and L’Horizon, each concept expressing a different gastronomic identity. Vegetarian options, gluten-free dishes, local sourcing and sustainability are fully integrated into his menus, without compromising on indulgence.
While he avoids naming a single signature dish, he admits a fondness for slow-braised meats, cooked for seven to eight hours and paired with refined potato purées enhanced with olive oil, olives and tomatoes. Ever curious, he also enjoys reinterpreting overlooked ingredients such as pipengaille (angled luffa), even transforming its peel into a condiment.
Passing on Knowledge
For Krishna Beeharee, success is collective. He consistently highlights the work of his teams and encourages young chefs to pursue the profession with passion and humility. His goal is clear: to train a new generation of culinary talents capable of representing Mauritius and Victoria Beachcomber on the international gastronomic stage. A mission driven by a chef for whom cooking remains, above all, a matter of heart.
