L’engagement du groupe Sun Resorts pour la restauration du récif corallien à travers la nurserie de coraux à l’hôtel Long Beach a été récompensé lors de la 21e édition des prestigieux Hospitality Awards®, à Paris le 30 novembre dernier sous le Haut Patronage du président de la République Française Emmanuel Macron. Le groupe hôtelier mauricien Sun Resorts a reçu le prix de la meilleure initiative en matière de développement durable pour ce projet. Ce prix récompense une initiative ou un programme exceptionnel qui témoigne de l’engagement d’une marque ou d’un groupe hôtelier en faveur du développement durable, du commerce équitable et/ou de la responsabilité sociale de l’entreprise envers les populations et le personnel locaux, et/ou les sites touristiques et les ressources naturelles.
Seize groupes hôteliers internationaux avaient soumis leur candidature et trois candidats ont été retenus pour la phase finale : Accor, Marriott International et Sun Resorts. C’est finalement Sun Resorts qui a été annoncé lauréat du prix. C’est la deuxième fois que Sun Resorts remporte un trophée aux Hospitality Awards®. Le groupe avait déjà reçu en 2018 le prix de la meilleure initiative en matière de Développement Durable pour son programme SUNCARE.
Microfragmentation
Le centre de recherche marin de l’hôtel Long Beach développe la première ferme de coraux terrestre à microfragmentation sur l’île Maurice, en collaboration avec l’Université de l’île Maurice et le Dr David Vaughan de la Fondation Plan a Million Coral basée en Floride. « L’objectif principal de la Nurserie de Coraux Sun est de contribuer activement à la restauration du récif corallien. Grâce à la technique de microfragmentation, le corail peut se développer jusqu’à 25 à 40 fois plus vite. Un corail qui aurait mis 600 ans à se développer pourra se développer en moins de 20 ans », a commenté le Dr Vaughan.
De son côté, François Eynaud, CEO de Sun Resorts, s’est réjoui de cette reconnaissance internationale. « Nous sommes très honorés de recevoir ce prix prestigieux et cette reconnaissance internationale. J’adresse mes félicitations à toutes les équipes de Sun Resorts, en particulier celles du Long Beach, qui ont contribué à ce projet innovant. Nous sommes fiers de constater que la Nurserie de Coraux Sun va contribuer à la restauration de nos récifs et à la lutte contre le changement climatique », a-t-il souligné.
Long Beach coral nursery wins Hospitality Awards® award
The Sun Resorts Group’s commitment to the restoration of the coral reef through the coral nursery at the Long Beach Hotel was rewarded at the 21st edition of the prestigious Hospitality Awards®, in Paris on 30 November under the High Patronage of the Long Beach coral nursery wins Hospitality Awards® awardPresident of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron. The Mauritian hotel group Sun Resorts received the award for the best initiative in sustainable development for this project. The award recognises an outstanding initiative or programme that demonstrates a brand or hotel group’s commitment to sustainable development, fair trade and/or corporate social responsibility towards local people and staff, and/or tourism sites and natural resources.
Sixteen international hotel groups applied and three candidates were selected for the final phase: Accor, Marriott International and Sun Resorts. In the end, Sun Resorts was announced as the winner of the award. This is the second time Sun Resorts has won a trophy at the Hospitality Awards®. The group had already received the award for the best sustainability initiative in 2018 for its SUNCARE programme.
Microfragmentation
The Long Beach Hotel’s Marine Research Centre is developing the first land-based micro fragmentation coral farm in Mauritius, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and Dr David Vaughan of the Florida-based Plan a Million Coral Foundation. « The main objective of the Sun Coral Nursery is to actively contribute to the restoration of the coral reef. Thanks to the micro fragmentation technique, the coral can grow up to 25 to 40 times faster. A coral that would have taken 600 years to grow will be able to grow in less than 20 years, » commented Dr Vaughan.
For his part, François Eynaud, CEO of Sun Resorts, was delighted with this international recognition. « We are very honoured to receive this prestigious award and international recognition.
