Driving Innovation and Sustainable Leadership at Mautourco

Deyna Marianen: A Career Shaped by a Passion for Tourism

Some careers are built on ambition, while others emerge from a genuine calling. Deyna Marianen’s journey clearly belongs to the latter. Today serving as Commercial & Operations Manager at Mautourco, she has built her career around a simple belief: tourism is, above all, a people-centered industry.

After studying tourism, she discovered the inbound travel sector upon returning to Mauritius and immediately found her professional path. An experience with a hotel group in India, followed by a period in the Mauritian hospitality industry, broadened her understanding of international markets and traveller expectations. Yet it was inbound tourism that remained her true passion.

Combining Strategy and Operations

Over the years, Deyna Marianen steadily expanded her responsibilities. After leading the Commercial Leisure and Marketing departments, she took charge of projects before moving into operations, where she now oversees both logistics and sustainability initiatives.

This combination of strategic thinking and operational expertise allows her to support Mautourco’s growth while remaining closely connected to day-to-day realities. Her objective is clear: strengthen the company’s leadership position in Mauritius’ inbound tourism sector while anticipating industry changes.

Innovation, technology and increasingly authentic visitor experiences are among the key pillars guiding her vision for the future.

Sustainability as a Management Mindset

For Deyna Marianen, sustainability is far more than a trend. It is a decision-making framework embedded in everyday operations. Reducing waste, optimising resources, promoting responsible experiences and supporting Mauritian entrepreneurs are all part of this approach.

She also believes sustainable leadership requires raising awareness among teams and fostering a culture of positive impact. Challenges inevitably arise, but adaptability and resilience help transform obstacles into opportunities for growth.

A People-First Corporate Culture

At Mautourco, the value of “People” remains central. This philosophy is reflected in the company’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Under her leadership, women have entered roles traditionally dominated by men, particularly within logistics and transport departments. For her, these achievements demonstrate the value of creating equal opportunities for talent to thrive.

She believes empathy, adaptability and emotional intelligence are key leadership strengths in an industry built on human connections.

Passing Knowledge Forward

Convinced that Mauritius’ greatest asset lies in its people, Deyna Marianen advocates for tourism that celebrates craftsmanship, cultural encounters and authentic experiences.

Beyond business performance and the awards earned by Mautourco, her greatest motivation is sharing knowledge and experience. Inspiring younger generations, encouraging more women to access leadership positions and mentoring future professionals are now at the heart of her commitment.

In her view, the future of Mauritian tourism is being shaped today through responsible leadership, thoughtful innovation and lasting human relationships.

Growth and resilience

As Mauritius’ visitor numbers grew from around 650,000 to well over a million per year, Mautourco experienced a threefold increase in travellers handled.
“We restructured our teams into specialised departments to ensure a truly personalised experience. Technology played a key role, but our greatest strength lies in the dedication and passion of our 300 team members,” says Richard Robert.

Two pivotal moments have marked his leadership: the merger with White Sand Tours in 2015, which required integrating two distinct corporate cultures, and the COVID-19 crisis, which tested the company’s resilience.
“Eighteen months without clients or revenue… We made it through thanks to extraordinary solidarity. Our guides, drivers, and staff took on new roles with incredible creativity and commitment.”

A strong company culture

Recognised several times – Best Place to Work, Sustainability Awards – Mautourco stands out for its vibrant corporate culture. “A happy employee makes a happy client. When people love what they do, results follow naturally. Our role as leaders is to nurture that passion and make it thrive,” Richard Robert affirms.

A future shaped by people

Despite the industry’s challenges, he remains optimistic.
“The world is changing, and so are expectations. Jobs will evolve with digitalisation, but the heart of tourism will always be the human experience — that authentic connection between the visitor and the island. Mautourco has already planted the seeds of this transition. The future is in good hands.”
