TRIBUTE : a Takamaka Wine of Memory, Mastery, and Emotion
Amid the tropical stillness of the Takamaka Boutique Winery, a remarkable creation has just been unveiled: TRIBUTE, a 20% fortified wine by Alexander Oxenham. Both poetic and precise, it stands as a bridge between two generations—and as a symbol of the island’s quiet mastery of the art of winemaking. It was presented on Wednesday evening at the Hennesy Park Hotel to an audience of guests who are connoisseurs of the world of catering, hospitality and tourism, as well as dignitaries such as the Minister of Agro-Industry, Arvin Boolell, and the Executive Chairman of Airports of Mauritius Limited, Megh Pillay.
The story begins in the 1960s with Edward Oxenham, the first Mauritian to graduate with a Diplôme Supérieur d’Œnologie from the University of Dijon. Returning home, he became the soul of the family business founded in 1930 by his father. Visionary and meticulous, he introduced thermoregulation, stainless steel vats, and microbiological control—modernizing local production and transforming wine from a trade into a science. Yet beyond his innovations, Edward Oxenham passed on a deeper legacy: discipline, respect for time, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
His son, Alexander Oxenham, followed in his footsteps, also studying in Burgundy before returning to Mauritius to chart a daring new path. Through the founding of Takamaka Boutique Winery, he pioneered tropical oenology—the art of vinifying the island’s own fruit. His muse was the lychee, that fragrant, delicate emblem of Mauritian summers. After fifteen years of experimentation, Alexander perfected a technique that captures the essence of the fruit while expressing an entirely new terroir.
With TRIBUTE, he pays homage to his father—mentor, innovator, and inspiration. “This wine is a son’s tribute to his father,” Alexander says with quiet emotion. The process reflects both science and soul. Lychees are harvested by hand at perfect ripeness. Fermentation begins slowly, then is halted through mutage with neutral spirit, preserving the fruit’s natural sugars and raising the alcohol to 20%. The wine is then aged for five years in glass demijohns, exposed to the sun and sea breeze—an oxidative aging process that deepens its color and complexity.
The result is a sensory revelation: amber-hued, full-bodied, and layered with notes of prune, walnut, honey, and spice. The palate is lush yet balanced by a fresh tension, leading to a long, elegant finish. Served slightly cool, between 16°C and 18°C, TRIBUTE pairs beautifully with aged cheese, foie gras, or dark chocolate desserts. It may be enjoyed now for its expressive richness, or cellared for decades to come, allowing time—the ultimate craftsman—to refine its harmony even further.
Encased in a sculpted glass decanter, its label adorned with Edward Oxenham’s portrait, and sealed with a zinc-alloy stopper, TRIBUTE is more than a wine—it is an act of remembrance, a meeting of art and science, of heritage and innovation. Produced in a limited edition of just 200 numbered bottles, it encapsulates not only the memory of a man but the essence of an island that dares to dream through its vines.
“Time is the true artisan of this wine.” – Alexander Oxenham
