Vainqueure de la 1re édition du Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup en 2024, la favorite Jenny Clarke a rempilé cette année encore face à l’Irlandaise Jane Morrison. Se déroulant du 31 mars au 5 avril 2025 sur la pelouse devant le manoir du Sugar Beach, le Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup 2025 a de nouveau tenu toutes ses promesses. Avec 24 participants contre 16 l’année dernière, la compétition gagne en notoriété et met Maurice sur la carte du croquet mondial. La remise des prix a eu lieu le vendredi 4 avril en présence de Eileen Karen Lee Chin Foo Kune-Bacha, ministre délégué à la Jeunesse et aux Sports.
À cette occasion, Joelle Edwards-Tonks, Chief Commercial and Operations Officer chez Sunlife a tenu à féliciter tous les participants. Elle aussi annoncé la création d’une nouvelle académie de croquet pour les juniors : « Cette académie offrira aux jeunes ainsi qu’aux jeunes Mauriciens une expérience enrichissante allant bien au-delà du simple divertissement. Ils auront l’opportunité d’apprendre le croquet tout en participant à des compétitions amicales. Ils découvriront ce sport et auront l’occasion de rencontrer et d’échanger avec d’autres jeunes venus du monde entier, dans le cadre enchanteur de Sugar Beach ».
« Cela aurait été bien d’avoir un autre champion mais je ne voulais pas me faire doubler. C’est merveilleux. La compétition a été plus difficile avec plus de participants. C’était un format passionnant et rien n’était sûr à aucun moment », confié la gagnante à VoyA-g.
Parmi les joueurs qui ont marqué la compétition, Jenny avoue qu’elle redoutait le Belge Pierre Beaudry mais il s’est fait battre de très peu par la surprenante Karen Newbould qui partait un handicap plus lourd. Mais cette dernière n’a pu résister à la joueuse d’expérience Jane Morrisson qui l’a devancé pour affronter Jenny en finale.
Jenny Clarke, a commencé à jouer au croquet tout en poursuivant son doctorat au Royaume-Uni à l’Université d’Oxford dans les années 1990. Elle est membre à vie de la Canterbury Croquet Association et du United Croquet Club. Elle joue à la fois au AC (Association Croquet) et au GC (Golf Croquet) et a remporté le championnat du monde féminin AC en 2012. Le titre GC lui a toujours échappé, mais elle possède deux médailles d’argent et trois médailles de bronze dans cet événement. Elle a été membre des équipes de test AC et GC de la Nouvelle-Zélande pendant de nombreuses années.
Jenny a remporté divers titres ouverts et féminins en Nouvelle-Zélande et au Royaume-Uni, mais ses titres les plus marquants à ce niveau sont ses trois titres de championne en simple aux Australian Open en 2010, 2018 et 2019. L’année dernière, elle a pu remporter le titre de champion de Nouvelle Zélande qui manquait à son palmarès et également le titre en double avec son époux. En plus des nombreux titres qu’elle a remportés, Jenny a régulièrement été classée numéro 1 chez les femmes à la fois en AC et en GC au cours des 15 dernières années et a également atteint la plus haute note AC de toutes les femmes depuis le début des classements.
Du côté mauricien, la satisfaction était de mise même s’il n’y avait personne sur le podium. « La plus grande satisfaction était d’être félicité par nos adversaires sur le niveau des Mauriciens qui a considérablement augmenté depuis l’année dernière. En tournoi de double, il y avait deux Mauriciens en demi-finale et Samuel de Gersigny est aussi arrivé en demi-finale pour le Plate simple. On est très fiers d’avoir pu nous mesurer avec les joueurs internationaux. On a fait de très beaux matchs et l’apport du Sugar Beach a été déterminant dans notre progression », nous a déclaré Jérémie Brousse de Gersigny, capitaine de l’équipe mauricienne qui s’est donné pour objectif de convaincre les clubs de golf de Maurice d’ajouter le croquet dans leur offre. « L’aménagement d’un terrain de croquet peut attirer des joueurs de croquet de plus en plus nombreux. Cela peut faire de Maurice une destination de croquet par excellence puisque nous sommes au carrefour des civilisations au cœur de l’océan Indien entre l’Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande, l’Afrique du Sud, l’Égypte, le Pakistan, l’Inde et l’Europe ».
Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup 2025: bis repetita for Jenny Clarke
Jenny Clarke, the winner of the inaugural Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup in 2024, successfully defended her title this year against Ireland’s Jane Morrison. The 2025 edition of the Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup took place from March 31 to April 5 on the lawn in front of the Sugar Beach mansion. This year’s competition featured 24 participants, an increase from 16 last year, reflecting the event’s growing popularity and its role in putting Mauritius on the global croquet map. The prize-giving ceremony was held on Friday, April 4, in the presence of Eileen Karen Lee Chin Foo Kune-Bacha, the Junior Minister for Youth and Sport.
Joelle Edwards-Tonks, Sunlife’s Chief Commercial and Operations Officer, took the opportunity to congratulate all participants. She also announced the creation of a new croquet academy for juniors. « This academy will provide young Mauritians with an enriching experience that goes far beyond mere entertainment. They will have the chance to learn croquet while participating in friendly competitions. They will discover this sport and have the opportunity to meet and connect with other young people from around the world, all in the enchanting setting of Sugar Beach. »
« It would have been nice to have another champion, but I didn’t want to be overtaken. It was wonderful. The competition was tougher with more participants, making it an exciting format where nothing was certain at any point, » the winner told VoyA-g.
Among the players who stood out in the competition, Jenny admitted that she was worried about Belgian Pierre Beaudry. However, he was narrowly defeated by the surprising Karen Newbould, who started with a heavier handicap. Ultimately, Newbould couldn’t overcome the seasoned Jane Morrisson, who won and advanced to face Jenny in the final.
Jenny Clarke began playing croquet while pursuing her doctorate at Oxford University in the UK in the 1990s. She is a life member of the Canterbury Croquet Association and the United Croquet Club. She plays both AC (Association Croquet) and GC (Golf Croquet) and won the AC Women’s World Championship in 2012. The GC title has always eluded her, but she has two silver medals and three bronze medals in this event. She has been a member of the New Zealand AC and GC test teams for many years.
Jenny has won various open and women’s titles in New Zealand and the UK, but her most notable titles at this level are her three Australian Open singles titles in 2010, 2018 and 2019. Last year, she was able to win the New Zealand title that was missing from her list of honours and also the doubles title with her husband. In addition to the many titles she has won, Jenny has consistently been ranked number 1 in both AC and GC for women over the last 15 years and has also achieved the highest AC rating of any woman since the rankings began.
On the Mauritian side, there was a sense of satisfaction, even though no one from the team stood on the podium. « The greatest satisfaction came from being congratulated by our opponents on the significant improvement of the Mauritian players since last year. In the doubles tournament, two Mauritians reached the semi-finals, and Samuel de Gersigny also made it to the semi-finals in the Plate singles. We are very proud to have competed against international players and to have played some excellent matches. The support from Sugar Beach was a pivotal factor in our progress, » said Jérémie Brousse de Gersigny, captain of the Mauritian team.
His aim is to persuade golf clubs in Mauritius to include croquet in their offerings. « Developing a croquet court could attract more players and position Mauritius as a premier croquet destination. Our location at the crossroads of civilizations in the heart of the Indian Ocean, between Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt, Pakistan, India, and Europe, provides a unique opportunity for this sport to flourish here. »
