This participation in the SICA is part of a series of landmark events in the world of Mauritian chefs for 2023, explained the Mauritian Chef’s Association (MCA) at a press conference held at the Hôtel Ambre on 2 September. The competition brings together India, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and other countries.
According to Chef Pillay Veerren, who is in charge of training the team, « the team is highly motivated, but it’s also stressful because this time we’re aiming to win, not just take part ». « It’s ambitious, but we’re working hard to achieve it. We’re expecting some formidable competitors, but we’re confident in our talent and know-how.
On the young talent front, the association also unveiled a second competition scheduled for November and December, when two trainees from one of Mauritius’ hotel schools will travel to China to showcase their skills. They will have the opportunity to travel alongside their coaches to discover the diversity of the world’s gastronomy and enhance their skills.
In addition to the overseas participation, to mark International Chef’s Day on 20 October, the MCA plans to work with its partners to create an award for excellence in hospitality services, including bartending and cooking. The award, entitled the Mauritian Chef’s Association, Food, Beverages and Services Award 2023, will highlight the art of the table, innovation in cocktails based on local products, cooking, pastry-making and, for the first time, hygiene, by highlighting the importance of stewards. The event will also reward 10 chefs who have contributed over 25 years to the culinary industry by actively participating in international competitions and teaching other chefs.
Another major announcement was the celebration of the MCA’s 25th anniversary, scheduled for 30 September at the Hôtel Ambre. The event will bring together all the MCA’s committees, associates and chefs for an exceptional evening. During this event, the partners will have the opportunity to present their products, discover new flavours and showcase Mauritian cuisine, which is gaining notoriety worldwide. The MCA has also underlined the growing importance of cuisine in the choice of a tourist destination and is committed to further professionalising Mauritian cuisine while highlighting high-level gastronomy.
